Door Seals
I am getting a lot of water in my passenger footwell after rain. I think one of the issues is that the door seal has a distorted shape from original, so think a new one is in order.

Had a look on Land Rover Parts and its basically £52 + Vat for one side. Seems fairly expensive to me.

They do an "All Makes" one which is nearer £20 + vat. Just wandering if anyone had experince in the difference in quality between the two or could recommend a good alternative to go with? I notice the weight of the genuine LR seal is nearly 0.2kg heavier according to the website.

I would like to replace both the front ones, but at over £100, it doesnt seem worth it.

If everyone says only use genuine, then i guess i will just replace the knackered one.

Any thoughts welcomed.

Cheers

Quick question - does the floor get wet continuously or do you sometimes get a waterfall onto your feet, even when the rain has stopped? Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

when im driving in rain etc, i dont get anything coming in, when its left sitting and i come back to it, big puddle.

Never really noticed it dripping in, just find puddles. Another place it could be coming from is the fake hinge bit between the winscreen and bulkhead. cant remember whats its called Current:D4 HSE

Just asked 'cos I'm getting similar. There's loads of stuff on the forum about water ingress (if you haven't already, Google "Defender water ingress" and you'll find LR's official manual).

I've now packed kitchen roll into various nooks and crannies to find out where the water comes from. My suspects are:

1) windscreen rubber to frame seal (LR don't seal it!)
2) foam rubber seal under the windscreen gutter
3) "fake hinge"
4) various holes in bulkhead (engine compartment) that LR don't seem to care about sealing properly.
5) Clutch pedal seal in bulkhead (the water pours down the clutch pedal and spring is rusting)

My window seals are okay.

What I don't understand is where the water can pool up to give my "quick waterfall" down the pedal Rolling Eyes

Yup - both LHS. Yours might not have a cutout for the clutch on the LHS, so that might be a clue for me Thumbs Up

Forgot to mention, if I run out of ideas, I'm going to pack the gap under the gutter with butyl tape (leaving the foam rubber in for now) If that works I have (only) read that you can:

1) loosen the fake hinge, get someone to sit on the roof to compress the foam rubber then re-tighten the hinge
2) dig out the foam rubber and seal with Sikaflex or similar

That would really be my last resort Shocked

I am a bit reluctant to go to LR in that case as I have also read they may take the roof off and other frightening things. We shall see... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

United Kingdom 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Stornoway Grey
Just to add something to this debate. I had a mysterious puddle ( Laughing ) in the front passenger footwell of my 110 USW (Puma). I couldn't spot where it was coming from. I switched the fresh air/recirculated air slider to fresh air the other day and water dripped onto the mat when I went round a corner. I was still puzzled though of how it was getting in.

Fast forward a few days and whilst fitting my fibreglass snow cover I noticed a pool of water at the bottom of the cavity of the air intake (i.e. beneath the wing top). I discovered a rubber plug at the base of the cavity. This plug has a fluted or tapered outlet which allows water to drain away. This plug was blocked with muddy crud. I cleared it and the cavity now drains away Thumbs Up as it should. The consequence of this action and therefore my assumption is that this has cured the footwell puddle. It's never happened since.

I may be wrong but it does seem more than coincidental. We've certainly had more than enough rain for the puddle to have reappeared but since I unblocked the plug there's been no ingress of water. If this is the source then that's all well and good but I'm afraid I can't confirm it's route from the cavity to the cab. It may be worth checking though.

Thanks for the information. I will check that.

It might not be the seal, but its definately deformed and the door doesnt shut particularly well, so a new seal might help.

Just not sure if its worth the +£50 + Vat compared to a cheaper alternative.

Thanks Current:D4 HSE

Yes, definitely. Aftermarket door seals are rubbish.

Genuine is the way forward, I've just replaced both on my 90. The way I look at it, £110 for a pair of door seals every 20 years is not bad going...

I agree, use genuine.

One thing you could try .. I used to get some water in on my td5, passenger side - it seemed to be in the curve of the door where the rubber bends, I put some grease on the rubber and that solved it .. Thumbs Up

Still trying to find somebody who has fitted the Nak seals. Expensive but if they stop the leaks and fit better than the OEM ones then I would fit them.

Usual trick is to draw a line of chalk under the suspected leak points - you can easily see where the leak crosses the chalk Thumbs Up
