Defender Steering rubbing with Steering Guard ?
Hi All,

Looking for a bit of guidance here, noticed a slight rubbing noise occasionally when out in the defender today. After parking up and scratching my head on what it might be I noticed this when inspecting!

It seems the connector rod between the steering and the damper is rubbing against my steering guard Rolling Eyes (This is on the drivers side wheel as seen from right in front of the tyre)
I had a good look around and cant see that anything has moved or broken but it is clearly contacting and a quick nudge on the steering wheel confirms that this is where the noise is coming from.

So any ideas on the underlying cause Question also not sure that i like that tight clearance between components so is this similar in other set-ups Question

You need only two tools in life: WD-40 and duct tape.
If it doesnt move and it should: WD-40.
If it moves and shouldnt: duct tape it.

I have a few inches clearance, should not be that close. Have you moved anything in that area recently? 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6

I have a Southdown guard that's now on it's 3rd vehicle, clearance is nowhere near as tight as that in the photo. TBH I'd not be happy driving it like that, if it were me I'd slacken the guard fixings to see if it can be better aligned, failing that it would be a job for Mr Angle grinder on the guard or remove it altogether. Steve.

guards all vary. Southdown ones i run have a machined slot taken out of that area. best bet remove it and grind out 1" or so. Cheers

I haven't had a chance to investigate in any serious manner but not sure what it was like before hence query ?

I am seriously wondering if the guard has moved in some way Rolling Eyes although nothing is obvious from the visual inspection I think will need to unbolt a few bits and see what is going on as not keen to drive until resolved. Defender 90 TD5 County -

Looking at that photo, it would appear to be a rather poor design and make.

A decent hit on the steering guard is extremely likely to be transmitted to the steering components.

That guard bracket looks like it is beginning to rust, maybe under electro plate?

Am guessing the actual bash plate is coated ali and the coating is coming off??

If you take an angle grinder to the bracket ensure you take some decent rust prevention measures.

Is that a screw resting on the sump guard just in front of the lower nut?

If you grab and give it a tug does it move.

Hmm i think only thing to do is get some spanners on the job and look deeper.. It may be a bad guard but don't know as i din't fit it originally Question

clearly not keen on such a close fit and agree want to avoid a knock taking out the steering as it is a truck used for offroading on a regular basis so was quite surprised when i noticed that the clearance was non existent!!! Defender 90 TD5 County -

No that is some coating that clearly has been applied flaking off... everything is solid hence the confused thinking and it doesn't look like it has moved at all (although a knock could obviously shift it) I gave it a whack with a mallet to see if it moved but it wouldn't so will get the spanners out ASAP and see what is going on me thinks.. Defender 90 TD5 County -

Right inspected and cause found, it seems that it is pretty old and has suffered some wear and tear

A temporary solution has been to grind away about 8mm clearance to be sure that it wont make contact even if it wears further in the immediate / short term but will look into picking up a new steering guard as it has clearly seen better days

Any suggestions on a decent guard to fit on a D44 bull bar Question Defender 90 TD5 County -
