What type of Seal / Sealant
Hi all,

Couldn't find what I was looking for, mainly as I don't know exactly what I am looking for.

I removed all the interior trim panels as I am adding some sound proofing - the I noticed a large thick rust spot on the main body panel between the two side facing seats. It is located just under the window where the window panel and wheel arch panel are joined.

I also noticed that it is bubbling on the outside, but that the seal that should run between the two panels is crooked and alot of water was pooling around it.

So my question is, what seal / sealant should I buy to replace the old with, and is there anything I should bear in mind before doing this? http://mylandy90.blogspot.ie/

Hi Ham.
If you do a forum search for "Replacing rear capping" you'll get all of the info you need about this problem from some very knowledgeable members who've had this problem. Thumbs Up

Thanks Steve -

Just checked and looked at this thread,

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic22261....ar+capping

Which is great, as I probably will have to do this shortly.

Although I am looking for the correct seal I need for between the window body panel and wheel arch body panel

Thanks again Steve, much appreciated! http://mylandy90.blogspot.ie/

I used tiger seal, or sikaflex for joint over the top of the foam gasket to get my 90 watertight, and will be doing the same with my new one. Don't use silicon.

tiger seal is much more adhesive than silicone and dries harder - silicone after a while peels off. 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

As mentioned silicone is prone to pealing off, it also causes terrible reaction with paint should you need some done later, and tiger seal/sikaflex is actually easier to get a good finish on, and clean up around after the application.

It also has a mat finish, not shiny like silicone, so looks better.

Sikaflex or Innotec are good. Defenitely do not use silicone as it contains acetic acid which will attack the metal and increase corrosion.

Great thanks Andy and everyone else,

Tiger Seal bought, it's not too expensive!!

It's only the second time I heard about Tiger seal, and both were this week. Long story short - I was told about a guy recently rebuilding his 90 and had everything galvanised - the bulkhead he received was warped but he thought he could just push it into place. Turns out he had everything fitted, roof and all were Tiger sealed when he decided the warped bulkhead needed to be fixed. The mechanics had a serious job of removing the freshly sealed panels - a gas heater and a 10 tonne press were used...

So based on that story alone it seems like a pretty solid product - and based on what's said online!

Thanks again Andy - I'll let you know how I get on! http://mylandy90.blogspot.ie/

Get some degreaser/cleaner hand wipes,

I use the big wipes
http://www.plumbingsuppliesandfittings.co....13560.html

They will help with the clean up after the sealing, and make sure all is dry before starting Thumbs Up

This is just the thing I have been planning to do for a while. Am sure there is a bit of a leak from thisarea, certainly is fromthe seal between the windscreen and bulkhead Sad

Are you planning to loosen the sides from the tub in order to get the sealant in? Haven't got as far as taking off the interior panels yet, so no idea how big a job this is...

Be great to know how you get on,

cheers
Andrew

Thanks again Andy - have them bought!

Yeah - I think I'll have to clear the garage first before going anything, or hopefully we get a crazy dry day! Laughing http://mylandy90.blogspot.ie/

Hi Andrew,

Yeah looks like I'll need to loosen the sides from the tub - doesn't look too difficult as theres a few nuts to loosen. The tough part could be removing the original sealant. I'll definitely let you know how I get on - I'll be doing it the weekend after next so March 1st - and then report back here.

I'll also be updating my blog with what happens!

Hi

That will be brilliant. Look forward to the updates.

Are you also going to do the seal between the windscreen and bulkhead?
