Gearbox dip stick
morning all,
I`am still a bit new to all this and sorry if this has been covered before.
After my defender getting a new gearbox. In couple of thousand miles like to change its oil just to keep everything happy, I was wondering if anyone had made or had drawings of some kind of dipstick affair or bent bit of welding rod for checking its level.
just to save time in future for servicing the car instead of draining and measuring it out.
This no doubt would come in handy for owners of new vechicle`s so they can check there`s some oil in there unless its all on the outside Big Cry

The Series One and early Series Two's were fitted with a gearbox dip stick, which could be accessed internally from a flap in the transmission tunnel, then along came progress, and it was removed, instead you have to rely on the filler plug hole on the side of the gearbox, accessed from underneath! - Like I say, progress....... Remember though that on the TDCi the filler plug is not a level plug, and you must not overfill the box.

There really isn't any way to check the level - you cannot find out how much oil is in the box. All you can do is drain and refill with the correct amount of oil.

I think you need to put 1.2 ltrs of oil in the gearbox

Exactly Thumbs Up

For the 2.4 TDCi a gear oil change needs 2.2l as the "full" capacity is 2.4l but 0.2l remains trapped inside Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Thanks guys at least some of us now know its not a fill to level type affair.
Will knock one up next week when on early shift and let you know how I get on, this may be a good excuse to play with the lathe Very Happy .
I`am going to assume mine is at the correct level in the first instance make tool then drain box measure fluid drained off put it all back in and check.

I'm sure it's only a few mm (like 3 or 4 mm) down from the filler plug.

Some people have "topped up" to the filler plug with no apparent issues (indeed stories of better gearchanges!), and said that it only took a small amount of oil from the 2.2 litres to the filler plug... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Be careful if overfilling - there are many stories of gearboxes running very hot indeed if overfilled. Also many stories of gearboxes overfilled from the factory of by dealers.

There is a reason why LR specify 2.2L, not 'fill to plug' (possibly the tail-down attitude of the box).

If you want a "better" gearchange you are better filling with the correct amount of a better oil, rather than simply more of the standard oil.

hi,
I do not understand why they did change, it was so easy to verify the level before !

I forget to see at what level it was when new, otherwise if I know who much under the hole, it is ok for me

Er...probably shouldn't do this - other members have had nasty shocks.

Just drain the oil (making sure you can remove the filler plug first!), make the volume up to 2.2L, and use that as your guide. Good luck.
