I think I have just ordered a loom from Holland, my Dutch is crap but think I got it right. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Before you go mad with this mod, and I've done it
Measure the voltage at the bulb. Mine was 14.2v with the factory loom. LR aren't that bad, just adding a relay would help prevent the switch burning out. (Admittedly the new loom got the voltage up to a staggering 14.3v and now my headlights have been transformed from dim candle to the shining light of babylon, or I can't the difference) |

Noticed a 'Glitch' or 'Feature' with my eBay special loom.
Dip works well Main works well Flash works well without lights on Flash doesn't work with Dipped on (is this an MOT fail?) Anybody else's do this? |

if the feeds to switch relays is from the oringal headlight plug then it should all work
also in your link to where your measuring the voltage between old set up and new set up the voltages will be the same as not measuring with the bulb lit up , the load the bulb takes is what gives you the voltage drop , with the bulb still connected and lit you would have seen a voltage drop of 1.5-2 volts on the old set up |

Yes if this was the cheap loom from Ebay then i had the same problem they had wired the relays wrong, Im in Spain at the moment so cant remember exactly which is wrong but im sure it was just two of the pins around the wrong way. That loom was ok as a starting point but by no means a plug and play. I brought two of the harnesses and then modified them into one really good loom and put a seperate live feed to each relay with two fuses so i have effectively isolated the circuits for both main beam and dipped beam. When you have the loom in front of you and follow the wires while looking at a pin out of the relay its really obvious which wires are wrong.  2001 TD5 110 County Station Wagon - sold

So you changed yours to 2 x 5 pin relays, hmmmmm.
I'll look up some wiring diagrams to see what's wrong |

Right so I've been and had a look and it's not that the pins are wrong but the basic loom is incorrect in principle.
It uses a 5 pin relay to switch power between 87 & 87a when switching Dip to Main. This works fine as it isolates each circuit on the switch, the problem is that 'Flash' activates both circuits at the same time, the ebay loom prevents this. So basically the loom needs to be modified to 2 standard relays and the 'Main' relay needs it's own fused power source or a jumper from the Dip relay. (As per Dan ) |

Oh and Munch was quite right measuring the Voltage without load was silly

Thats right Tiger you have reminded me and thats why i decided to put the two seperate power feeds in, there is still nothing stopping you from jumping the live across to the second relay holder but the two feeds are better. I kept the original 5 pin relays just ignored the middle pin and treated it like a 4 pin relay which works a treat

When doing this mod, where do you take the extra positive feed from ? Direct from the battery or from the start feed? 1999 Defender TD5 110
