Garage walls
I've recently moved into a 50 year old house with garage largely untouched since built. The bricks have been painted white at some time in the distant past. Being the age it is the garage is narrow and an extremely tight fit for most modern cars (sorry, the Defender lives outside).

Would you:

1. Wire brush off the flaky paint and then paint over with a good quality exterior wall paint (I've used Sandtex in the past and been pleased with the results).

2. As above but use a high build or textured surface paint-like material (I've not used before and am c**p at getting a smooth surface with a float trowel).

3. Dry line and skim (and given my float trowel skill deficit that means paying someone to do the job).

1. and 2. keep the width but present a hard surface to opening car door edges while 3. presents a softer surface to the car door but reduces the width of the garage slightly.

Any/all suggestions gratefully received, especially ideas other than 1. to 3. above.

Cheers

Rob

Go for 1 Thumbs Up

For 3 you used to be able to get rubber bumper for door edges. Or consider something like an old 10mm foam sleeping mat/neoprene rubber fixed to the wall to protect door edges. A lot cheaper and quicker then dry lining.

Leave the car outside.
Turn it into a workshop/bolthole.
Cover walls with posters of half naked young ladies.

What do you want to do with the garage when it's done?

If it's to store a car then it just has to be dry and airy, it you just want to have it looking good then the wire brush/paint will be fine. If it's something more detailed then you're into rendering the walls and plastering over it. It all depends where you want to end up.

“present a hard surface to opening car door edges”

So? A bit of paint on a door edge may/may not be scraped off? A touch-up brush will work out cheaper than dry-lining, skimming, skirting boards, painting etc.

Whitewash the walls and a couple of strategically placed carpet tiles, job done…

Thanks all, the balance of opinion is clear.

It'll be the cheap option then, scrape and paint - and I've got plenty of bits of carpet underlay, so that's car door protection dealt with as well.

Can you use a compresor & spray gun to apply masonry paint? It'll speed up the process a lot? Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Good thought Martin, I had considered spraying but then there's always the cost of hiring equipment etc. and since I am retired, time and speed are not of the essence.
