Starting issues
My 2001 TD5 has recently been stubborn to start. The glow plug light is on, the fuel pump runs and the engine turns quickly, but it often doesn't fire up. If it does fire, it runs for a few seconds, then dies. Eventually it will start, and once warm seems to start first time, every time. This has only just started happening over the few weeks, possibly getting slightly worse as time goes on.

I'm going to look at some of the issues highlighted in other posts, such as:-

Oil in injector loom
Relays under seat
Air in fuel line/pump

Are these the correct things to look at given the symptoms..? Are there other things I should look out for..?

Injector O rings and copper washers.

My 90 did this (with the old cracked head on), and when I replaced the seals, it started much better.

In mileage terms, less than 3k, in time a good few years.... Shocked

It might just be worth having a check on the air bleed valve found on the top of the filter housing behind the drivers side back wheel. Just pop off the front left fuel line and unscrew the pipe tail out of the body(19mm spanner) and see if you can blow/suck through it. If you can't either replace it/open it up and clean it or just leave it out to check. If you can blow through then I'd be tempted to get the injector seals and washers replaced.

Similar symptoms to my Disco TD5, and that was the injector seals.

Worth checking first that there's no air getting into the system any other way... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

have a look at the fuel pressure regulator located at back end of head, are there any small diesel leaks ?

I would agree with the injector seals as we had a similar problem with a disco 2 at work a couple of weeks ago, has it only done it since it got cold ? if so is the ambient temp sensor in the air filter box o.k ? 2005 Td5 90 XS

Seems to be happening more often in the cold weather, but started ok this evening and it's pretty cold here.

Re: injector seals, if one or two are leaking would it not just run rough rather than not fire at all..? I've ordered some seals, but just trying to get my head around the symptoms.

I had the same issues as you, gradually got worse and nearly left me stranded once, tried injector seals, new battery, fuel filter/housing, fuel pump, serviced, fpr check and clean filter, check ecu loom none of which made a difference, turned out to be a bad earth going to where the ecu, I just run a wire directly from the battery to where the earth is under the ecu and it was fixed and cost nothing, worth a try before spending loads like I did

Make sure you get genuine seals, there are plenty out there being advertised as genuine but are fakes.

My suggestion would be to try the prime procedure before starting, if it then starts ok after the prime I would change the injector seals.

Mine failed over night. Went from first spin starting to non starter in a night. New injector seals, all good.

Will check that, it does feel more like an electrical issue rather than fuel, but who knows...Sad
