Mud flaps and Towing
Hi all, will be returning to towing a caravan again this year, probably a Sprite 540. I've read elsewhere that when towing the mud flaps , due to the airflow between Defender and caravan, can be forced into the rear wheels and worn accordingly. Is this true and is there a way to avoid it? Whistle LANDYWATCH

Yeah, that's true, it depends how fast you go..... A friend of mine smelt burning rubber and his tyres had ate his mud flaps Laughing

Never heard of it before myself, but I'd say better s bit of wear on the mud flaps than having mud / stones / exhaust soot making a mess of the front of of the van! Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

I've never had a problem with my D90 but I have to tie up the flaps on my Dakar.
A 110 or 130 shouldn't have any problems.

If this is a problem, how about the old-timers' trick of a chain or cord from the bottom of the mudflap back to the rear crossmember.

A year or so ago in the dark I backed over a high kerb and pushed a mudflap onto the tyre.
Driving forward dragged it into the tyre.
It sounded as if a very expensive repair was needed to the back axle.
I drove ten miles home before I looked at the back end.
Was I relieved to see it was just the flap.
About 2-3" was missing.
I've got a photo somewhere.

That's a good idea Blackwolf, but on a 90 the rear mudflaps are mounted on the rear cross member. A metal strip fitted with bolts to the mudflap would stop the flap being forced onto a wheel, although I do have bumperettes fitted so could have a chain to them, but if this isn't a problem in normal practise then nothing needs to be done as long as I don't back over a curb. Ordered some Aluminium strip to place on the inside of the mudflap to prevent it being forced onto the wheel when towing, just in case. Thumbs Up LANDYWATCH

Hi Warpig, it's 20 mm wide so I'm going to experiment with a strip the length of the mudflap with a U bend at one end to clip over the bottom of the mudflap with a self tapper SS screw to secure. At the other end there will be a Right angle bend that will be secured by the middle bolt that secures the mudflap bracket to the bottom of the rear cross member. Forgot to mention the vehicle is a 90. Whistle LANDYWATCH

I used to do a lot of miles for my previous job in 3 different aged 90s towing an 18' trailer. The mud flaps cracked along the embossed line below the bracket and if not noticed early, decided to part company. I was accused by my dealer of off roading it, but as I worked for their sister company, they knew my use of it and warranty was always done, especially when it was a part that had been replaced previously and therefore was under Parts Warranty. friends following me would always comment on my flapping mud flaps when they followed me on the motorway. The bottom did wear a little if I remember, but I think that was on the one with the little wheels fitted, hence mudflaps closer to the ground when doing serious towing.
