England 2014 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Aintree Green
News from LA Motor Show
Land Rover have given a little more info on the "leisure portfolio" of their model line up, see links below.

However the interesting thing from the Defender point of view is the slide from Autoexpress where they clearly show a pickup model in the "dual purpose" portfolio... guess time will tell whether this will come to fruition?

^ not if you look on the link. In fact this is actually the most concrete info we've had on the defender's style and place in the land rover line up.

Things we've found out:
-The defender is clearly more rugged than the discovery or RR (obviously)
-it appears that the freelander will become part of a discovery range starting at Evoque money or below, so the fears of the defender becoming a cheap lifestyle 4x4 shouldn't be fulfilled.
-the defender will genuinely continue on, and is part of the current plan not a 'possibly in the future' thing...

... All good news I feel.

Now for the style:(pic below)

Assuming that the RR icon on the slide below is as good a representation of the real RR as the defender icon will be the new defender, were in for a treat!

It has a chunky appearance, rear mounted spare wheel, characteristic roof, high waistline, and slab flat rear end. All good news.

It looks to me like 'a proper 4x4. Still an incredibly recognisable shape and clearly not just a beach accessory. The icon seems to imply good approach, departure, ramp break angles and a sizeable ground clearance. Good. I'm excited!

There is nothing to imply that the DEFENDER will live on. Only a 'Dual purpose' which the Freelander/ Evoke slots into the edge of. I belive it is going to be something closer to a L200/ Navara etc.

As for the signature outline- looks identical to the DC100 which has been confirmed as 'NOT the Defender replacement'.

I'd disagree completely there. On numerous occasions we've been told that the freelander will become a discovery and the defender will become the dual purpose range. And the Evoque is clearly a range rover. If you read the article and others it clearly implies/states that the defender will be nothing like these, supposedly there will even be a pickup/DCPU versions but I guess nothing is certain.

As for looking like the DC100 I think the outline is much straighter, much more upright and much boxier. The DC100 was sloppy and soft and this looks tall strong and a 'traditional 4x4'

Just my interpretation anyway but I don't think you could say it looks 'exactly like the Dc100'... I guess we will just have to wait and see though... Fingers crossed!

And RobKeay that article is dated Aug 2011 Wink I did the same think whilst browsing the site the other day! Cheers, David
