pressure in a cold expansion chamber
Hello, just opened the cap on my exp chamber with a completely cold engine. There was a fair amount of pressure released on opening, and a big bubble or two surfaced in the tank. In recent days I've been finding a spray of coolant on the underside of my hood above the exp tank cap.

Should there be pressure in a cold coolant system? If the tank holds pressure, how am I getting coolant on the underside of my hood?

Thanks for any advice.

Exactly the same symptons as I just had with my project90.

Cracked head. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad causing the cooling system to pressurise. and funnily enough, mine would "hold pressure" as yours is, for a good 3 or 4 days after the engine was last started.

It steadily got worse. start the engine and the top coolant hose would be rock solid in about 15 seconds.

Then if I put my foot down, it would blow out the top of the expansion tank.

Then it burst a hose, and blew another one off the radiator.

I changed the head then. all seems good now with a replacement head.

On the plus side, it's quite easy to change the heads over on Td5's.

Thanks, D.J. I suspected as much. Guess the son and I will replace the head. Any recommendations for a good manual to follow, and a good parts supplier? Would be nice to have a comprehensive list of everything I need so I can buy everything together and then just get it done.

I'd 2nd that request - a good 'head swap' guide would be deeply appreciated ...

Hi all,

This thread has me thinking ( Shocked ), my expansion chamber is always pressurised when cold, even if it's stood for over a week without being used. But my Defender seems to run fine when I use it and the coolant level remains constant (I also saw a Youtube video of a stream of bubbles coming up into an expansion chamber for a running engine with a cracked head, which mine doesn't do, so no problems right???).

So, how much pressure in a cold expansion chamber is too much pressure and a sympton of a problem?

Thanks.

Mine held pressure & occasionally I could hear bubbling but couldn't see them, eventually it started to use coolant (very small amounts) then eventually did the same as diesel Jim's. Big Cry

Got a new head
from Turner & Co. They had it here in only 2 days. Was going to install it myself last weekend, but never got the time. A local garage will have it starting tomorrow. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of a difference it makes, having a head that doesn't leak. I've come to the conclusion mine has leaked since I got it, a year or so ago.

A thread back from the dead - but finally got mine into a garage, and the head gasket it going. The head is off to be tested.

Expensive day to the workshop.
