TD5 not starting.
Hello all,

As the title suggest I have a small problem, my TD5 doesn't start.

If I put the key in II all the right lights come on, but when I turn further to start the starter motor doesn't turn, What can cause this?
I am thinking off the relais or the starter engine. Are there other possiblilities?

The starter motor was turning over before even without a working ECU. The original ECU had water damage and was completly rusted on the inside but the starter motor was turning.

The battery is full, just recharged after I had the same problem yesterday.

Fuel pressure, The gauge is still on a quarter full, but could low fuel pressure prevent the starter motor from turning over?
As far as I know my alarm ecu is programmed not to look for the remote. Roel

Had the problem just before Christmas after I'd had the rear door open for a long time with the key in th ignition.
Tried the usual lock/unlock proceedures to no avail.
Eventually cleared it with doors shut, key in ignition, press lock and unlock on fob, then started as if nothing had been wrong.
It's not happened again

But have you taught your new engine ECU to the alarm ECU?

You need to put the engine ECU into learn mode (via suitable diagnostic equipment), and then turn the ignition off for 15 seconds. Whn you turn it back on the engine and alarm ECU will be matched.

Basically the alarm ECU (10AS) sends out a code, if that code is different to what is stored in the engine ECU it will not start.

If you haven't aready done so, you also need to swap the injector codes into your new engine ECU, and make sure the ECU and mapping is correct for your Defender.

Just to clear things up.
The new ECU is programmed in my 90 injector and alarm. It was running till january 4th. As I was working on it. It was standing inside or outside depending what I was doing. And no rpoblems with extreme cold.

On January 4th I parked more out off the way as I had to start working again. Yesterday I had time again and wanted to get the 90 inside. But it didn't start.

Like I said before. The fuel pump runs, the lights oil, battery, engine, and glow plugs come on, but when I turn further the starter motor doesn't rotate.

I tested/did the following:
Charged the battery.
Put 20 ltr additional fuel in.
I took the small wire from the starter motor and tested if there any power on when the ignition key went into the starting position. But no power.
I connected a test wire on the small connector on the starting engine and hold it to the battery cable. The starting motor turned the engine over at normal speed but the engine didn't start.
So I think it's something electronic.
I changed the relais infront off the gear selector but that didn't help either.
So yes it looks like that the 90 is imbolised. Roel

The 10AS immobiliser controls the earth path for the starter motor relay coil on a black/orange wire (aka "crank enable"), and will only provide that ground if the immobiliser is off.

To prove the immobiliser is the problem, provide a temporary ground to the starter motor relay coil ground and try to start the engine. It should start but will turn off within a few seconds as the ECU doesn't receive the correct code from the 10AS.

I tried what Martin suggested and yes it started but directely shut down again. So I put the cables back as normal.

Then I tried the Disco 3 Hard reset. Pulling the cables off the battery and keep them together for a short time. That didn't help.

So I gave up for a while leaving the cable off the battery and put them together so a long Hard reset.

Then I remebered Lauries post. I have installed an early 1984 door without the interior light door open switch extension so after about 2 hours I tried again.
With my foot I pushed in the door light switch then connected the battery cables. put the key in the ignition and pushed the remote buttons first both at the same time and then lock and then unlock. And then it started. Question

Then I got confused I shouldn't need the remote and I expected the remote battery to be dead. So I did a following test I took the remote off the key set and brought it to the other side off the house approx 20m and with walls in between and still the 90 starts. Whistle

So What happened? What did I do right to get it starting again? Roel

Sounds like your immobiliser is not configured correctly - you need to set it to immobiliser only mode, not using the alarm functions (e.g. door switches).

I don't know if there is an "open" alarm mode you can use so you don't need the alarm remotes?

Their must be an open option as I can start it without the keyfob near the 90.
It looks al OK now but still don't know what happened.

Currently it is starting when needed and it doesn't react on the key fob. i.e. It doesn't imbolise even when the door light sensors are pushed in and pressing lock on the keyfob.

So I still don't understand what happened.

Maybe to do with humidity? It's garaged now. (no problem). It was freezing before (no problem) but it was just above 0 and wet for a few days when I had the problems.
I know my 90 had swimming lessons that's why it was an UK insurance write off. Brown water has been to roof height on the drivers side but not been to the battery Whistle It killed the original ECU.

So I would love to know what really happened. Roel

Problem solved new alarm ecu. There were sign off brownish water in the ECU. We knew the 90 had swimming lessons but as it worked before we thought the alarm ECU would be OK.
Problem solved and my tax free TD5 is now road legal. Mr. Green

So now the real work can start, making it my off-road toy. Starting with installing my lockers from the Camel and then put some protection on: i.e. Snorkel, side bars and roll bars.
Still have to decide if I put the 235 85 BFG MT's on or the Goodyear G90 7.5 x 16. Roel

BFG MT's!!! I've run with both and wouldn't go back to G90's... they're great when they're brand new, but once they have a few thousand miles on them they're rubbish.

BFG's are much better wearing. (and look better too! Cool Cool )

The problem is I have both of them, the G90 are currently under my donor 90.

And the BFG's are still under my Camel in the museum.

Both still have plenty of thread and both are better then the much to small tyres I have under my current road legal 90.

I think I will put the G90's on first and as soon as I have time to strip the things I need from the Camel I change to BFG's.
I love the BFG I had them on my Camel for about 45000 Miles and they are still only half worn. And good road behavior too much better then the Michelin XZL's that were on the Camel when I bought it. Roel
