CB Radio wiring advice
Hi all,

I've just bought an Albrecht AE6891CB Radio, and need now to wire it in. The plan is to wire it to a cigarette lighter. Is this suitable? Heard some stories that it can cause interference?

All advice much appreciated!

I have a similar model and swap between trucks. I have it on the cig lighter socket no problem, just make sure you earth the antenna

Best to have it hard wired to a permanent live feed via a fuse.
Otherwise it'll turn on and off with the engine.

Pete,

I would strongly recommend you wire it with its' own feed from the battery. Do you just have the one battery or is it a twin set-up?

As the 6891 has a remote head unit, where are you mounting the main body and where are you putting the head unit? Depending upon the cable routing for the two you can pick up interference if it runs parallel to another cable that is drawing a high amperage. Try and make sure they cross at 90' if it has to cross another cable.

The 6891 is a great unit and with mine I tried to mount everything as far away as possible from other electrical devices. i.e. in a roof console, but even with this I got interference from cabling for the spotlights. A Rood console is also very handy for running the co-ax cable to the aerial if its mounted on the roof or the rear.

Not sure about other models but on a Td5 the cigarette lighter is on the same circuit as the heater blower fan....so when this is on it interferes with to CB if you wire into the cigarette lighter. This may not be a great problem to you. I had mine wired into the cigarette lighter for a year but now have it on a permanent live because it sometimes gets used as a PA and this means the keys don't have to be in the ignition!.

Antennae earthing can be a pain.... I had to run an earth cable to the chassis to get a low enough swr reading.

Smb- Running a twin battery set-up. I'm planning on putting the main box behind the drivers seat, fixed to the rear bulkhead. Then the screen mounted to the top of the dashboard. What do you think? Where've you got yours mounted?

Well mines a Tdi, so the original lighter socket may be on the same heater circuit. However, I've got some new ones wired differently Thumbs Up An engine to TDi for!

I now need to resurrect this thread!
Its been a busy few months and I've been putting off wiring the CB in. But now the time has come, I must do it!
I've decided to hard wire it in, as it seems like the better all round option. Now, How do I go about this?
The power cable that came with the CB has an inline fuse built into the positive (red) cable. Now, I'm assuming that I basically connect the positive cable to the positive terminal on the battery, and the negative cable to the negative terminal on the battery. Is this correct? Is the inline fuse already there enough, or do I need another fuse somewhere else?

You can put the negative to the body/chassis rather than the negative of the battery.

However, sometimes, you can get better SWR readings if you earth it to the battery (that's what I've heard, although not got any proof of this).

As for the fuse, yes, the fuse inline should be enough, but make sure this is as close to the battery terminal as possible.

By close, I mean length of cable as any cable pre-fuse won't be protected.

Don't forget to earth your antenna too. I'd also strongly recommend doing some SWR checks before you use in anger, just incase your are sending out too hot. Craig Rogers

Here's how it's come wired...

The inline fuse is in the section of wire built into the CB, and then there's an extension section joined by the connector. Is that acceptable to fit like that? Or do I need another fuse closer to the end of the cable? An engine to TDi for!

Yes, I'd run that wire from another fuse holder in the battery compartment.

If you think you might add other electrical accessories in the future then maybe consider a new fuse box in there and run your CB from there. Craig Rogers

Unfortunately there's no room in my battery box for another fuse box! Embarassed So would one of these be ok?

Current end of positive cable in, and then connect the other end of the cable (coming out of the fuse holder) to the battery terminal? An engine to TDi for!

Yes, that'd work. A regular fuse holder not a maxi would be more suitable though really just because the fuses are more often to hand. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️
