Basic Layout.

A centre differential is required to allow the vehicle to turn corners. See below, the front axle has a different arc to the rear.

On Firm Ground we have 25% traction/drive at each wheel

The down side of a centre diff is it will allow all the drive to one wheel if traction is lost.

So when this happens lock the diff and drive will be forced 50% front 50% rear. The the diagram shows below that the rear 50% drive will enable forward motion.

Once moving the front wheels will then keep the vehicle moving as the rear looses traction.

Now add some Traction Control and with 3 wheels without traction the brakes are applied to these wheels (20 times a second I think) forcing the drive to the fourth wheel resulting in forward motion.

Thought I would add this as well. A very simple, very old explanation of why diffs are required and how they work.

Nice Harleys.

Now, it sounds like the ETC would compensate for the lack of axle dif? Boldly going nowhere

I checked all the difs on my horse this morning, they all work fine.
Of course, in a pirouette, the dif is working pretty hard. Boldly going nowhere

'Real' LR drivers will tell you that you don't need TC Very Happy

I've got it on my current one but didn't have it on my last one. You can compensate for lack of TC by changing the way you drive and getting better at reading the conditions. TC is for people like me who are pretty rubbish Thumbs Up One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS
