Td5 goes to limp mode
Hoped my first post might be a but more exciting than this.
Have a running issue with my 04 double cab defender- when the engine is revved the management light comes on and it turns itself off- wait a few seconds and it will restart and run until revved.
So far I've replaced the injector loom as this the first places I looked for issues, the old one was full of oil, the new one is a genuine part and I cleaned all the plugs out including the red ecu one.
I've also replaced the crank position sensor as the old one had a slightly chewed looking end.
Turbo waste gate is moving freely, disconnected map and maf sensors and they do not seem to make a difference to the running.
Totally stumped and looking for help

I had same issue in my car and it was CKP sensor wires that goes from engine to ECU. Simply make new ones in shield wire and good to go, maybe one of the best things. Be careful, that problem goes up until car dies, then you'll have to call the tow....

How did you work out it was the wiring at fault?
Just had a look inside the ecu and it's as dry as a bone no oil at all

Hi Jon

You say the end of the crank sensor looked a bit chewed when you replaced it, did it have a shim fitted ?

I ask this as my 2001 TD5 had strange running problems that were eventually traced to the crank sensor not having the shim fitted. The indy put a new sensor plus shim in (there had been no shim fitted since it was new) and the problems were resolved.

The symptoms on mine were that all power/revs were lost at 2200 rpm, below that it was fine.

My guess is that if the sensor was damaged it is to close to the crank and getting a faulty reading.

Part number for the shim is NSJ000010.

Hi Bob, thanks for the quick reply
Just pulled out the replacement crank sensor and this one is fine with no damage.
Still won't rev past the 2000 ish mark before the engine management light comes on and she shuts down.
Think the damage to the old sensor may be a bit of cr.p in the bell housing that became Spun up up with the flywheel. Just changed the throttle position sensor too for good measure- no change.
Luckily I do have a spare td5 110 that runs well to swap parts over with to test them-'just don't tell the wife Rolling with laughter

Does sound like the problem I had except I did not get limp mode.

If I remember correctly the garage put a new sensor in and ran the vehicle and the same problem was there, They did not originally fit the shim as there was not one fitted on the old one.

They tried the shim as a test and it resolved the problem completely - the new sensor showed no signs of damage without the shim either.

May be worth the £7 or £8 the shim costs to see if it that simple ?

I also think there was an LR service bulletin for this exact problem on TD5's.

The gap needs to be set to the correct tolerance so as the senser reads correctly. Banging Head Caused me alot of headaches a few years ago on a cossie - it was missing a lug on the bottom pulley, was like it when I stripped it but after replacing every sensor was the only thing possible left Banging Head Banging Head Banging Head Banging Head Welded a new one set the gap and she fired up straight away. You just brought a load of memories back

My indy was doing a lot of hair pulling and head banging as well Thumbs Up

They replaced as was when the vehicle went in so it was either like that since new or fitted incorrectly before I purchased it. They had tested everything out on diagnostics and nothing showed up. New injector loom fitted just in case, the previous one was only a month old and actually had a problem of some sort, and as a last resort before suicide decided on the shim and the rest is history.

It was alot of ££££ and 2 weeks of my life I won't get back. Exactly the same, had been running sweet did a full strip and rebuild (lowered the compression) put it back together and nothing. No faults on diagnostics etc. Called in alot of favors and even had some 'Cosworth' engineers stumped Rolling Eyes

Really hoping it is as simple as a shim under the sensor- none was fitted when I removed the original one- landy was running lovely up until last Friday and now she won't rev past the 2k mark without the engine management light coming on and shutting down- would be pulling my hair out if I had any Very Happy
Looks like its a slow drive down to Hunters land rover in Guildford to see what testbook says Sad

Jon, just so that you are aware, Testbook didn't show any crank sensor problems on my TD5 hence the problem they had sorting it out.

Also, if the old injector harness was full of oil there is a chance it has got into the ecu and caused damage - that will be expensive Sad

Opened up the ecu- dry as a dry thing inside- no trace of oil anywhere. At a total loss as to why she won't rev without the engine management light coming on.
On a plus side got the heated seats working so I can sit in comfort whilst not going anywhere Big Cry

Ok bit of an update- got myself a hawkeye as have 3 td5 in the family so made sense.
Ran diagnostic check and fault code 3197 popped up- topside switch failure. What I'm guessing is the excessive oil in the loom has shorted the ecu.
Couple of questions
1. Can I fit a discovery ecu as there seems to be more of them about.
2.Does any one have a good ecu in exchange for beer tokens in the surrey area
Ps it's a 2004 defender with aircon etc

I had the same fault code on mine. Found a used ECU on eBay. Will be syncronised on Sunday. And I hope that this will be the end of my problems.
