Tyre pressures - (wheel wobble) (BFG ATs)
Hi

I have just fitted a set of twisted alloys with 285/65/18 BFG ATs on my 110 SW. I'm using it 99% on road so thought that the 285s were probably a good option. I have basically just 'stuck them on' without checking pressures etc.

I have a nasty wheel wobble at about 55 - 60mph

Firstly, can someone recommend what tyre pressures I should be using for road use.

Secondly, if all is okay with joints etc, what steering damper would you recommend? (If I were to replace the track rod ends etc, is there a good recommendation?

Thanks

Phil.

LOvely looking wheels! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Why not just start at the factory pressures? for 110 it's 28psi front and 48 rear. mine handles fine like that.

wheel wobble in the mid 50's often suggests out of balance tyres. might be an idea to have them checked. BM52

I'll agree those rims are not all they are cracked up to be Sad I have two sets and all 8 have been sod to balance, spares are black Wolf rims and they balance perfectly.

Thanks for the replies.

I checked the pressures and have adjusted to 40 rear and 30 front. It must be the balancing .. which is a little annoying considering the cost of these wheels!.. I'll get them sorted in the week.

It is slowly coming together .. what next, intercooler/remap etc or kbx grill and lights? .. Loving being back in Land Rovers!

Ta.

A wobble at a certain speed does seem to point toward balancing.

I have 285/75 R16 BFG ATs on 0 offset 5 spokes, & I was advised by a person 'in the know' that you can get a harmonic flexing of the track control rods after hitting surface imperfections.

I have just fitted a set of solid track rods and a Bilstein B6 damper and steering feel is much better, how much of that is the damper & how much the rods I don't know, but recommended.

i was told (not by the supplier) but its the bfg's that are well out of balance... takes even a good balancer a long time but you can get them near, had to have mine on and off rotating tires to get them balanced...

I get that wobble same speed had them balanced several times several different ways as well and its still noticable, I put 35 psi in all round fully loaded and towing never had any problems and it gives a good ride Thumbs Up

I've had a damned annoying wheel wobble for a couple of months. I've completely re-bushed the whole lot including A frame joint with metalastic bushes, new(take off) shock absorbers all round(genuine), replaced all ball joints on the steering, new front wheel bearings, you name it I've renewed it. It was beginning to get a little wearing and even though I swopped wheels front to back I cured it completely yesterday. The existing tyres were coming to the end of their usefullness and I fitted a couple of cheap and cheerful chunky remoulds a mate had given me to tide me over for now and unbelievebly it's cured the wobble. I had been a little loathe to fit them as I expected them to make any play worse but no, it's now sorted.

Okay .. I've had all the wheels balanced .. TWICE!

First people said that they had managed to balance them, but when driving it back home down the motorway it felt like the whole thing was going to shake itself apart .. vibration from front and rear now!

So, been to a better 4x4 tyre specialist today and had another go. They have managed to balance the wheels BUT only by putting weights on the outside of the wheels .. and lots of them .. not exactly pretty Sad

You could have just the wheel balanced first, on its own. Then the wheel and tyre combination. In another life, driving a RX8, I had a similar problem, solved by moving the tyre position on the wheel, as both wheel and tyre had a bias and the tyre fitter was able to get a position of tyre on wheel that required just 1 small inside weight in the end. You need a good, interested fitter though. Whistle LANDYWATCH
