Clutch judder and odd part found in bell housing
First hello all , always found good answers here so thought I best join.

The clutch on my td5 110 has stared to judder a lot when pulling away
At first I thought fpr but can't find it leaking

The. I removed the wadding plug from the bell housing to see what fluid might be in there.

All that dropped out was a round ball bearing ?
Where could it be from , the release bearing maybe ?

I would have thought release bearing. as this is a proper bearing.

Not sure what is inside the DMF, but i'm sure it's mainly rubber and big springs, no bearings.

If I had anything that looked like acomponant id have the box off straight away with a fresh brew and call in sick fo. Three days

Thanks all, my skills don't stretch to gearbox removal and I lack anywhere to work on it other than the street.

Guessing if I'm paying some labour it might be worth doing the clutch at the same time ?
And would a bearing failing cause the judder ?

Theres no bearing on the clutch face so it shouldnt creat judder but. theres a chance tg. Release bearing isnt detatching correctly if its damaged. Cars a fun one tiny feature can cause something totally random. Are you local to suffolk?

If the clutch judder is only when you are just engaging the drive, with your foot still on the clutch pedal, then you might well have a dodgy clutch release bearing. Even if the bearing isn't breaking-up, you can still get a judder from a rough bearing. There is no point just replacing the release bearing if you are paying for the labour, you need to find a good LR indy who can do the whole 3-piece for you (bearing/cover/plate). A good indy would also be able to make an assessment of the DMF while the clutch is off. Thumbs Up Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.

Im south west.
Yep the judder is only when tou start to lift the clutch. If i pull away with a good amount of revs it ok but just lifteing the pedal slowly to pull away on ticker over is very bumpy.
When I found the loose ball I was kind of resigned to a big bill.
It's on 140000 and I have good history going back to about 80000 miles
And no mention of a dmf being changed

Found a small hole in the foot well too , at least that's a cheap fix
I have an indie close by that I trust so off to see them on my way to work

An update.

Yep the release beraing had failed but the juddering was the flywheel
After a big bill and new clutch kit dmf spigot etc its all back and gear changed are smoother than ever since I got it

Glad you got it sorted! It's great when you can get a Defender back to the way it should be, rather than let it slip into being a nightmare to drive. A bit like having a new car.....every month.... Rolling with laughter Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.
