A fellow laner had mentioned to me that he had seen Vinyl wrapped wings on a few laning Land Rovers. Theory is it should protect your paint form the worst of the brambles, especially if youre driving something a bit newer.
My Landy is going to be part of a display at a festival event soon so when someone suggested they wrap my Defender 110 I thought Id give it a go so the old girl was looking her best. Turned out great and I love the look of it. Jury is out as to whether it will protect it or shell shed her skin like a big black snake on the first thorny bush!! I must admit it turned out much better than I expected. Little bit concerned about how it will handle thorny bushes but time will tell.
Very interesting process to watch. When the stuff first goes on it wrinkles like and elephants ear and then when they gently heat it all the wrinkles come out. Rivets - They superheated the vinyl in those areas so it virtually melted to the rivet in like a liquid form. Very clever but quite a fine art. The odd one isn't quite as good as it could be but generally they look like they have been sprayed. Cost - They did it to promote themselves as my car is going to a festival event in the local town. Not sure on the price. It did take them a full weekend. Hinges - They tell me they could of taken off the hinges and wrapped them but I decided against it in the end. It would take them so much longer and I wanted the car back. Check out my YouTube channel for green laning and Land Rover "how to" videos. |

Haha! No not a chance. I'll be a but gutted if it does just shred off straight away because I love the new look but apparently it can be patched or re-applied panel by panel quite easily. although that is a nice job done, I think that nothing ages a defender more than matte paint finish 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

interesting - do you have to inform the DVLA of a change of colour? not sure myself as it's not a 'permanent' change as in a repaint?

If your driving in areas where brambles may well be an issue I think you'd have a lot more to worry about than bramble rash / a few scratches. Only take a sharp fallen tree branch or some debris hidden from sight and even at a very very low speed one hit and you've got permanent panel damage. That looks very cool!
I seem to spend a lot of time driving into a low sun at the moment and was thinking of getting a matt black wrap on the bonnet to cut down on the glare. I reckon that a Stornoway grey Defender with black accessories including black Patriot rack would look OK with a black bonnet. |
