Toughbook
I am looking to mount a toughbook in the front of the 110 to run sat nav and to have for emails, and possibly internet on the move. Maybe even have an external disc drive and run DVDs etc

I have seen some refurbished toughbooks on fleabay and wondered whether they were up to the job. Are they suitable or old ones which would not be much use for me

Here's an example link

Any alternatives?

Dave

and without email you cant get anything off the bl**dy things.

typical example. we ran a MM route and marked it on a TB, TJ was running an IPad and couldnt get a copy of it without being online, difficult in the middle of no where. Cheers

Dell are selling a toughbook copy but a lot of mixed reviews

A Panasonic cf18 or cf19 is my preferred option for overlanding but dvds or anything processor intensive will be a challenge, great for nav apps and storing photos, doing emails etc

A reasonable all rounder for < £200 would be a refurbed IBM Levono T61, dual core, 2gb, 80gb disk, good build quality and as long as you keep the fans clear will run and run and run, and quick enough to run dvd's

Bluetooth should work, depends what you are needing to send it to I guess.
Edit: seems BT won't work for file transfers Sad

I use an iPad ( with 3G) and run mmap, Copilot, google maps, GPS motionX, and View Ranger...so have all eventualities covered..!

It's probably the most robust solution...I have it in a Griffin case and use a Ram mount. No moving parts to break and waterproof enough for even a Land Rover.. Very Happy

Cheers

BT did not work, sending a MM file from a CF18 to a I Pad !!!

I Had 2 CF18's, One bought new, and a ex BT unit (now BPman's )
Now rarely use the Toughbook, but its the more reliable unit, a bit heavy when mounted in a Ram Mount, and driving rought offroad, The I pad is better then due to the lighter weight
Screen is better on the I pad (IPad3) California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

I wasn't aware that runnning DVDs might be a bit too much for one, just thought it would be handy for the kids in the back if they want to watch a film or something.

I can see from looking on Fleabay that they are a few hundred quid as opposed to the toughbook which was more like £100.

Would any of the other tablets do a similar job. I'm not up the various types hence the original post

Thanks

Dave

You can buy tough shells for ipads etc. I have Otterbox Defender (!) for phones. They have both armour & silicon outer. For tablets you only need anti-shock mounting. Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

No amount of protection to a I Pad etc, will bring them up to the standard of a Panasonic Toughbook,
certainly not the treatment my CF18 has had ! California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1
