without changing the gears in the main gear box any change to wheels, diffs will have the same % difference to all gears high and low box. So as JST says the easiest answer it to get a lower geared transfere box to lower low range and then bigger wheels/tyres or higher diffs to raise high range, this will then give you a greater range of gears although low range may end up about the same as now depending on what you do.

My standard 90 feels too low geared on the motorway even in 6th gear but with the same gearing as a 110 / 130 which is much heavier Im not surprised. best speak to Ashcroft.

(Im used to driving a 118d BMW that does 38 mph / 1000 revs in top gear so its not surprising my landy feels low geared) DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

a 1:1 (or is is 1: 1.002?) box will give you a taller high range (ie more mph per rpm) but low range gearing is the same i believe

1:1 boxes are hard to find though.

yours has a 1:2 box as std

your on 3.54 diffs so not sure there are other easy options there to increase speed per rpm. plenty to lower it. Cheers

Thank you for your ideas, I was hoping something new would come up Very Happy

I found that kam has 2.83 Crown wheels and Pinion, using ashcroft calculator I got to this:

Standard Td4
High Low
First Gear 23.33:1 63.97:1
Second Gear 12.17:1 33.37:1
Third Gear 07.38:1 20.23:1
Fourth Gear 05.24:1 14.37:1
Fifth Gear 04.29:1 11.75:1
Sixth Gear 03.18:1 08.72:1

Td4 with 2.83

High Low
First Gear 18.65:1 51.14:1
Second Gear 09.73:1 26.67:1
Third Gear 05.90:1 16.17:1
Fourth Gear 04.19:1 11.49:1
Fifth Gear 03.43:1 09.40:1
Sixth Gear 02.54:1 06.97:1

Td5

High Low
First Gear 18.43:1 43.40:1
Second Gear 10.64:1 25.06:1
Third Gear 06.97:1 16.42:1
Fourth Gear 04.99:1 11.76:1
Fifth Gear 03.84:1 09.05:1

As Iīm aiming at r380 gearing I believe it will be fine, worst case scenario change the tranfer box to 1.4 ratio to reduce gearing in high range.

Thank you for your help.

Iīm puzzled,

what is your main focus - having the first gear like the R380 or the 5th or the 6th gear.
The 6 speed has a larger range of ratios, due to the rather low first gear.
So whatever you change - there is one aspect you win, and another where youīll loose.

Trying 2,8 differentials with the possible makeshift solution of using a "longer" LT230 sound to me like you make up for changes first done - back towards original setup while still loosing a lot in the low-box.

May I ask why you want to convert. What is it that annoys you with the Pumaīs gearing?

My primary aim its to correct the low gears expecialy in reverse.
I'm ok with all the gears because as you say I have 6 so a lot to chose from.
What I can't live with is my reverse in low, it drives me crazy.

Changing the crown wheel fixes my problem in low gears but can mess up high gear.
If it does I change the tranfer box to 1.4 and keep the td4 standard hifh range.

I hope I have explained myself correctly.

It makes sense no?

Regards

so you want a faster low range then but keep high range the same as a stock td4.

underdrive would do it. use that with high.

rest of vehicle remains stock then Cheers

More or less,

I want longer high ration also but my main concern is low gear,

underdrive would be a good solution but to many ĢĢĢĢĢ Very Happy

I just ordered 2.83 Crown wheels and Pinion, lets see how it goes.

Iīll post some feed back as soon as assemble them!

Thank you for all your inputs,

I can fully understand that the gear ratios are subject to personal preference. I for my part absolutely dislike a long reverse gear in High, as that is a pain at parking and reversing a trailer etc.
So I do not question what you have in mind.
But Iīm still curious whatīs the driving conditions where the short low-reverse upsets you.
Do you have so long distances to reverse. If so, why not use High-box?
I rather like very low Low-gears. Feels like they make things more control-able.

It has to do with the use I give to the car, itīs 90% for offroad competition and I need more wheel spin than I have.

I when I need to drive from standing still it over revīs without the car actually moving.

Before the td4 I had a td5 also with 35" tyres and I was quite happy with itīs gearing so Iīm trying to achieve the ratio I previously had.

I know itīs a different engine but I believe that with standard defender td5 gearing the car getīs a lot better,

Before fitting a Hibrid turbo my car had 170 hp and 495nm, now it has more and it pullīs happily to 4000 rpm, with is more or less what my td5 did so I think I will get a good setup.

For you to understand my fixation with the low reverse I will give you a example,

Image you get stuck in a mud hole and the only way to get out is to go is back, with standard gearing the car does not gain enough will spin (and speed) to get lose. (Most times in this situationīs High is not an option).

I think this way you understand.
