its hot but should it be.....?
Mal - I'm not moaning (not yet anyway) - just asking.

I know hot / pain are subjective but I'm wondering if something is wrong with either my handbrake and / or transferbox.

so it a bit warm outside at the moment but all the same I wouldn't have expected the handbrake drum / transfer box to be hot after a long drive to the point where they are almost hot enough to burn your finger?

I should have done a more detailed inspection ie compare these items to the gear box and diffs but didn't think at the time.

I'm sure the hand brake is right but would be interested to get your thoughts on the hand brake and transfer box - are they normally about the same temp as the diffs for example?

I think you'll find it's pretty much normal, my 90 certainly warms its transmission although I don't know the actual temperature. The handbrake will heat up through heat transfer.

Whilst not exactly representative, the wee tractor we had on the farm (John Deere 1140 low profile) used to get incredibly hot even in winter to the point that the transmission tunnel was too hot to touch!

I have to admit the transfer box getting hot doesn't suprise but I'm surprised about the drum brake?

and as you see below there appears (to my eye at least) to be evidence of the shoe dragging on the drum hence the black marks?

I've tried adjusting it and re-aligning the shoes but I get the impression the left shoe keeps returning to the same place (wrong place and too close to the drum) - but I'm not sure. Having not completed stripped the drum down I can't quite see how the thing actually operates???

Heat build up is pretty normal on a run. My advice is to up your dosage of Valium Wink Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.

My series gets very hot! The whole thing was like an oven after a high speed (45mph Thumbs Up ) run on the M25 at midday yesterday. Transmission was cooking up nicely. Assume they all warm up the transmission the same old and new. 1951 80" S1 2.0

How does it compare to the temperatures BEFORE you 'tinkered' with it? Laughing

the before and after 'tinker' test. damn it I forgot that one.

I presume I'm right with the black marks on the left shoe tho ? (they shouldn't be there should they)

and the question of why when applying the brake sometimes its feels like a small amount of movement and other times it feels like the full movement of the handbrake is doing something. to me that suggests something isn't return all the way back.....but I'm not what or why??

When i took my previous 90 to the pyrenees some years ago we would wash our socks etc by putting them in a sealed container in the back with washing powder and water in the morning,by mid day they were done we would stop for a brew,rinse them out and put them on the transmission tunnel to dry while we drove in the afternoon.They didnt take long to dry ! 2005 Td5 90 XS

can anyone explain why the handbrake cable feels different from time to time and the black marks on the one shoe?

To give you an idea how hot the transfer box gets I have a oil temperature gauge on mine (recommended when running an overdrive) and a high speed run on a hot day get my oil up to 75 - 90c.

thanks yobbie. thats the tranfer box all ok then (well temperature wise anyway).

anyone know if the handbrake drum is typically the same sort of temp through head transfer?
