long driving
hi all
im new to hear and quite new to my 2005 90xs about 4 months into it and cant think why i never brought 1 sooner instead of disco's and freelanders anyway my qestion is im starting to do alot of miles again and was wondering the best way to reduce engine noise etc a friend said i should try a diffrent transfer box so guys where should i strart ???

There will be plenty of threads about sound proofing a Defender on this and other sites.

When I first bought my TD5 about a year ago (55k on clock, 52 plate), I thought the gearing was very low and noisy. Big Cry

Since then I have put Difflock Oils in the gear boxes and diffs and put fully synthetic oil in the engine, the difference has been huge and the driving a lot more refined (for a Defener!!).

I rarely go over 70 except to overtake and all is fine.

If I wanted to bash away at 80 plus on the motorway (if that's possible in a Defender?) I would consider a lower geared transfer box, but I am not sure how well balanced the rest of the car is at that those sort of speeds, bearing in mind fat tyre, two propshafts, two gear boxes, two diffs etc. etc. Thumbs Up

A transfer box form a discovery will make a huge difference - I did mine last week and am really impressed with how much quieter it is. When you refit the floor and transmission tunnel, use a LOT of silicone to seal all the panels in place and fill every possible air gap - again this helps. My blog - www.anacreinhampshire.blogspot.co.uk

Disco Transfer box in my TD5 110, makes hugh difference to noise levels. especially motorway driving - I would recommend power upgrade as well, as she pulls better with the taller gear.

1.2 T box with Q gears, or gears from Dave A, or an overdrive. the latter you can select when you want it which means if you do alot of heavy towing or live in a hilly area it may be better suited. OD will also give a better rpm reduction and can be used as a splitter gear. they are quite expensive though.

i fitted an OD to my td5 when i faced the same decisions, mainly due to the amount of towing i do i wanted to maintain the std gearing. Cheers

Back on topic....I remember a thread about 'Noise Killer' there are some good recommendations on it....Sonic stated "It makes a huge difference!"

It will undoubtedly be a hell of a lot cheaper than the other engineering solutions suggested and may get you the level of noise reduction you desire without spannering, getting your mits dirty or emptying your wallet!!

Suppose it depends on how deep your pockets are and/or how drastic your initial course of action is going to be!

Noise killer mats are good and if you buy extra material from them, there is plenty of extra areas to be covered that help.

The change of transfer box has helped a lot, but I would not do the swop unless you have a remap done.

On that note I was stunned at how the remap made driving much much quieter.

If you do go for a transfer box change, I would be cautious who you buy it from at the mo, as there apears to be some quality problems with a well know company Big Cry Big Cry

I have read a bit on the net about overdrives, but they dont seem to be readily available - unless i'm not looking in the right places Laughing any more info on these?

Hi All.

I've been reading this thread with interest and thought i would add my two penneth.

I've got a 2001 110 CSW that was standard with 71k on the clock.
After driving 'normal' cars it seemed really low geared and noisy at first, and had a vibration problem above about 2500rpm.
At first I added a rubber sound proof mat to the load area which helped a bit.
Then I had the main and transfer boxes reconditioned and Disco 2 1.22 gearing put in the transfer box. At the same time the clutch and flywheel were replaced and the difference was huge.
Gearboxes and clutch work carried out by a company called Gearchange in Somerset - very highly recommended!
It was then that i bought the caravan and towing with the 1.22 transfer box was ok, but slow slow slow.
So i went for a TD5 Alive stage 2 kit (custom remap, silicon hoses, EGR removal, bigger intercooler and boost box) and the difference there was immense. Towing now no problem, but pulling away on steeper hills might need low range.
The last thing i have done is add Exmoor trim sound proofing mats in the front and middle row and the truck is now quiet and smooth ...... for a Defender.

I have an "Actech" accoustic blanket that sits on top of the engine. It is lead lined and deflects 30+% of TD5 engine noise downwards. I coupled it with their under mat stick on barriers too and it did what is says on the tin... For Sale if you want to uplift? 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..
