Hi,
I've got a Brownchurch rack on my 110, I use the small orange ratchet straps to tie them down, I weave the strap around the frame of the rack and over the kayak, I also use a piece of old inner tube to protect the kayak from the ratchet mechanism. One strap at the front, and one at the back. Works well for me therefore I won't be bothering with the "j bars".
cheers

I use a karitek rack which slides off to the side of the truck.

On the other landie I just have a pair of Thule bars, use J bars for carrying the fibreglass boat but tend to just fasten the plastic boats straight to the bars.

This depends on the type of boat you want to carry
slalom boats are fine on an upright bar and the boats mounted on their sides
Sit on Top are fine if you fit foam covers on the rack ends and strap them onto the rack direclty
Racing boats and Sea kayaks are best in V bars .. as below....
hope that helps

I noticed that it sits a lot lower too, the bolts are about 4mm from touching the roof!. I brought the Thule feet second had so couldn't say the exact model I'm afraid, I think they're just an older Thule model for the defender. Darren
