If the Puma is having the 2.2 engine installed for Euro5 in 2012. I would imagine that the project Icon will be a 2013 launch. But that's me applying logic and everything goes wrong when I do that.

Spoke to my inside contact at the weekend
He/she didn't know about the 2.2 engine, although that might be because it isn't part of ikon (with a 'k' by the way). Very tight-lipped and professional but it'll definitely be based on the D4 chassis - with independent suspension. The main problem they're wrestling with is the audience. The Defender sells 25k units every year - regardless of economic conditions. It really needs to sell double that to make it economical (otherwise they'll keep having to shave costs off the components and we all know what happens there). You have the utility lot that don't give a hoot about the details of the heritage but just want a hugely practical and straightforward truck in various body configurations. You then have the die-hard Land Rover passionates who need to be able to trace the body cappings back to the original series vehicles and will be devastated when LR shift to a new platform but might be tempted if the 'spirit' lives on. You then have the casual off-roaders who need to know that it is as hard as nails, has great off-road capabilities and that there are tons of accessories to bolt on. It is a hard job to satisfy all of these audiences and it's likely that one group will be severely tested with the new vehicle. To double sales - LR will have to go more main stream. (BTW: it made me wonder what camp I'm in - not sure at the moment which of the last two apply to me). One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

How about just better? LR has lost a lot of sales to Japmobiles around the globe, mainly because of the reputation for reliability. Additionally getting it on the US market wouldn't hurt. Fixing those two factors should easily double the sales (I'm not even sure if it is that unreliable — but the reputation is there). Independent suspension, eh... So I guess that means less articulation, more fragility and less clearance (I believe the exhaust goes under the axle on the Disco?). I don't think the hardcore ute lot are incompatible with the others. I'm sure even the utility folk kind of like the idea that the heritage can be traced back, as long as it does the job reliably. The vehicle could still look similar to previous incarnations but I wouldn't want it to become a mere fashion statement or, god forbid, part of the LR 'premium' family in an order to try and push up sales. It should be first and foremost a utility vehicle. Good for the farmers, good for the military. If it then feels like a proper evolution of the old concept, I think everyone would be happy. A lot of the things I hear about the Def2 just make me wish I could get a Puma, before production of the real machine ends completely. Will the Wrangler be the last real offroad vehicle? |

I suspect Jeep will be forced to continue with their current line up until someone finds some investment to create a new vehicle. However, it might not last that long.
In order for LR to make the Defender comply with regulations (it had to withdraw from the US a long time ago and is going to fail in Europe from 2013) they need a new vehicle. They can certainly make the styling reflect the heritage of the Defender/Series but there will need to be significant alterations to cope with crash tests, roll-over tests, pedestrian impact tests, emission tests... I suspect they'll do away with the Aluminium body in favour of steel (pure conjecture) and we'll see something like the the D3/4 chassis + monocoque. I too suspect it will be all steel. A pity really the way things have progressed in that department. It's been a steady evolution from galvanised steel + aluminium to plain steel.
Again, it just makes me want to get a non-Ikon Defender more. |

Well i've been lead to believe that the base vehicle will be centred around the monocoque type chassis that is currently in production, And that there will be two definiative wheel bases, pretty much whats available in limited resource on the web,
And as already stated in the above posts, it has to cater for a much wider audience than most other vehicles, for instance the Class Less image of the DEFENDER spans ALL of the classes from the working man / enthusiast right up to the upper classes and Royalty, Not every vehicle can claim that much of a broad sperctrum, Land Rover have their work cut out for them thats for sure ! i,ll be honest with you though theres nothing else on the market for less than £30k i would consider ! Land Rover have to come up with something special that isnt DISCO 4 Money and doesent look like a RRS, Time will tell ! DEFENDER XS CSW 08 TONGA GREEN |

Just a quick comment without going into some of the other points.
LR have publically said they will be moving back to ali bodies away from steel. Im amazed how much more of the puma is steel Mike |
