Removing silencer box, which one?
Hello

I am thinking about removing a silencer on my 95 Defender 300tdi (non cat). But which one to remove?

The middle box seems to be the more popular option, but a popular LR mechanic in my area insists that the rear box is the one to get rid.
Couldn't find much info on this with the search function...

Thanks for any help

The mid section you will get more from and as mentioned above. You should get a nice note under acceleration and a little more torque.
And my straight through is a Terrifirma. Thumbs Up Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Didnt realise you had one fitted Steve, The terrafirmas are good value for money and do the job perfectly. I must get round to fitting a stainless on my 90 to make it sounds less like a transit Whistle CSK Automotive

Yep, I do indeed Chris. What do you have? If your after a full system for the time being stick a straight through on they are only 50 - 100 and make a good exhaust note. More throaty like a TD5 than Transit. I also swear there is more go in it when you put your foot down. Less resistance if that makes sense. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

I suppose it would be possible to paint with VHT paint but I don't know exactly what temperature the exhaust gets especially manifold end. That and of course it would be totally pointless.

Off Topic I've also got another sales proposition for you but you'd have to E-mail / PM me to discuss. Dare not go off topic too much or I will be prosecuted by the forum police / know it alls... Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Thanks for the help

I was under the impression that the correct one to remove was the center box, but words from a respected mechanic in my area confused me a bit. He really insisted that the better one to remove was the rear one

Perhaps for the sound only but it will do nothing for the performance. I've only ever really known people change the rear silencer if they change to a full straight through system (usually Stainless) some say there can be issues with there being no back pressure and others say it's fine. Personally I'd either just go for a straight through mid section as I have OR a full system. Just the rear seems like little point to me..

Those said back pressure issue are what keeps me from going full straight. Never really went on to fully understand those issues, can someone please explain them better?
Thanks again

Centre box removal does seem the most 'popular' however I binned the cat and the rear box with my stainless system. Didn't like the rear box anyway it was ugly as sin.....

It gets rid of the catalytic convertor and the rear box, the centre box instead of having offset inlet/outlet pipes it is straight through.

That was actually one of the arguments of the said mechanic, that the rear box had an internal "labyrinth" and the center box was more straight, therefore restricting less the system.
Any comments?
Thanks
