Yep, one of the many who have been down that road. Funny you have to order the gasket separate to the vacuum pump. Still it is relatively straight forward and not too expensive. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Like any finely tuned instrument they can go out of tune occasionally  1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Careful all, we must ensure we are gender neutral here.
Using the word she could cause offence, we must ensure Defenders are called “it” or “that” or “the” Land Rover. You just never know.

She is the perfect reference to a Defender. It has all of the female characteristics you would want and some you would rather do without. When new the body is in wonderful shape, the rear end is a set distance from the ground, the suspension is wonderfully supple and compliant. You can't wait to run you hands over those wonderful curves with a sponge and soapy water. Yep could be describing the Mrs many moons ago. Roll forward a few years. Body work not in as good a shape as when you first laid eyes on her (describes the Mrs and the Defender). Rear end not quite as far off the ground (aptly describes the Mrs and the 200 tdi 110). The suspension is not as firm as it once was, at least you can fix saggy suspension on a Defender. As for the sponge and soapy water, well I occasionally lather the Defender, as for the Mrs..... Yep "SHE" aptly defines a Defender  1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Today I fitted the Optimill quick release boss plus a Momo Tuner steering wheel (in black).
Mine is a 2013 XS and I liked the original wheel. However I did this as an additional security measure as I have also purchased the Optimill swivel lock. Having said that I’m very pleased with the wheel, it’s performance. I.e additional right arm room and less rotation needed during manoeuvres. My ideal wheel would be a Startech, however at 3 times the cost of the Momo Tuner my head ruled my heart. Fitting the wheel and boss was very easy, took an hour including getting tools out, putting away and test driving. The steering wheel nut is too big for a 21mm socket, but not as snug as I would like with a 22mm, however the 22mm socket worked just fine. ( I wonder if an imperial socket would be perfect) The original wheel came loose easy with a little rocking while nut was still on but loose. I greased the column splines and the Optimill boss fitted nice and snug. I refitted the washer and nut and tightened to 43Nm. To make the turning signal cancellation pins more effective I wrapped self amalgamating tape around them to make them the same diameter as the width of the rectangular pins on the original LR steering wheel. All works perfectly and I’m pleased with the results. |

Good to know and well done. I do think however we need pictures...
Been tempted with the Optimill removable steering wheel ever since it was released but just not had the spare to pull the trigger. Last year it was axles and two diffs 
Interestingly I had a very long and frank conversation with my insurance provider the other day. The basics of the conversation were that having moved to middle Englandshire my insurance has doubled  I haven't paid this much for car insurance since my first car at 17... Yikes... The reason is that my postcode has been cited as extreme risk So I asked if adding more security to the vehicle and house would reduce the cost and the answer was no it makes almost no difference at all. The likely reason is not risk of theft but likelihood of accidents in the locality. As they say you cannot protect against stupidity and I would add stress and tiredness to that as well. Small fast A/B roads with tight 90 degree chicanes at the end, yup I can see many a BMW or Audi driver coming a cropper and the debris fished out of the ditches bears evidence of under trays and body panels
But, adding security devices like the removable steering wheels and pedal locks goes a long way to peace of mind |

I know it's a pointless task but I've been chasing some rattles.
The head unit cage was a bit loose, packed it out with some shims. These really are the most terrible design, that has not changed since I got my first car many, many years ago. New felts for the rear windows arrived but family duties mean I do not have enough time to fit those today. I think that will be one of those jobs that takes much longer than you think it will. The bearing on the ORE wheel carrier had a bit of play. There's two 30mm nuts that I nipped up a bit and that eliminated the slack. Not sure if there is a specific torque for these. |
