TDCI fault codes and MAF/EGR dilema
Okay so i have been having trouble with my defender since i bought it 3 months ago, its an 08 plate 90 2.4 XS SW.

So iv been putting the BAS tune box on recently to read and clear the codes that are flagging up. Most common are :

Quote:
P0110
Intake air temperature circuit

P0100
Mass or volume air flow

P0404
Exhaust gas recirculation control

P0606
engine control/powertrain module

P1103
Mass air flow sensor in range but higher than expected

So i was testing the MAF last night by unplugging it and TBH didn't notice much at all. I can definitely hear the EGR valve doing the self clean cycle after shutdown, i can hear it from the cab with the everything shut, is this normal? Also it has a JE Engineering '180'BHP remap on it and has returned around 22/23 mpg since i bought the motor. Even with the map i thought it would have been better, even if i drive like my granny it doesnt go far north.

So i have bought an EGR plate from ebay with a hole in it to try that, and am also thinking about buying a new mass air flow sensor. Does this seem a reasonable fix? Is there any way i can test the sensor using an ohmmeter? or clean it with something?

To fit the plate to the egr would it be best for me to remove the unit and use brake cleaner to scrub the internals befor the plate is fitted?

Many thanks,
William Arthur William

The P1103 code is what I call a 'nuisance' one and I get it periodically. After a few driving cycles that one would clear anyway along with the MIL light that accompanies it if no reoccurence arose. The remainder do seem MAF/EGR valve related and I personally think you're going down the right track.

To be sure I would drop either Lorryman or Pete at BAS a message as they are 'in the know' and would be only too willing to advise further.

EGR 'chatter' whilst on idle is what my EGR was doing before it stopped working correctly. It was also the time it started causing problems and also affecting MAF readings too. I replace the EGR for a new one and had no trouble at all since. If you want the EGR shut by a map then IIRC then general thinking is that the EGR has to be in perfect working order first or it will still cause problems even if blanked off and not in use. The egr plates are good but the only true cure is a egr close in a remap ? Using a plate with a hole eventually the engine management light will now old is your vehicle it may need a software update also personally and this is what I did with my 2.4 I had the egr shut remap file from Pete and also blanked it right off with no holes

I have done the same on my 3.2 Thumbs Up

If you need any more info let me no

Good luck is all I will say. Neutral I'm damned if I'd go through the pain of removing it just to clean it. I removed mine and replaced. On top of it being a b****er to get out and re-fit you'd have to take it apart partially too all the while you cannot drive it at all until it's completely removed and re-fitted. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Hmm lol depends how much money you have for my engine lol

I supply Petes stuff so could do it although you need a complete new remap I'm afraid but if I was to do it I can update the software at the same time at no extra cost Thumbs Up

It is a pain in the arse, but not too bad. In total it took about 2 hours to remove disassemble clean and put back on. Well worth having a clean out though, my EGR now closes properly.

Mark

Mark - Mine was tuck closed IIRC rather than open. What did you use to clean with? I assume it was coked up? Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Mine had a slight crack keeping it slightly open with the build up of carbon.

I used carb cleaner and the wife's toothbrush, she wasn't impressed... It came up really clean though.

Mark

Sounds good mark so did yours go through the shut down open and close cycle? But you had fault codes for it?

Just trying to see if we have the same symptoms. Sounds like a good wee job for after the exams Very Happy William

Steve,

I've been running with a remap and EGR blank with a hole since May 2010 when Robofarmer first knocked them out with no issues whatsoever.

K9f have you go egr shut in your map though ?
As if you run with just a hole in a plate it will throw the light up as I tested it on the plates starting with the smallest
