dipstick broken off!!?
the end "tip" of my dipstick has broken off!
what now? what damage can it do?
how can I get it out?

More than likely...... no damage will be done.

Where has it broken off?

If it has come off outside the tube, the best way to get it out will be to first drain the oil (and hope it flows out) and then the next step will be to take the sump off.

If it has broke in the tube you could either take the tube off and push it out, or push it down into the sump and get it out as above.

Either way- it is a good excuse to do a oil change (inc filter).

it's always had some resistance when pulling it out.. it finally just broke off I guess!
so now when I pull it out there's just a long piece of wire with nothing at the end to "check" the oil level.. www.ralton.co.za

I suspect it has made its way into the sump as you can push the wire all the way in............ looks like you are going to have to drain the oil and be prepared to take the sump off if needed.

with it being plastic (and very light) it should just flow out. The oil pick-up will also have a strainer on it so it can't be sucked up into the system.

is it plastic? ... (the little flattened piece at the end of the wire where you look to see if the oil level is ok...?) www.ralton.co.za

Mine (2009) has a moulded piece of plastic on the end. So unless they have diferent models I would have thought yours would be the same.

Mine is also a 2009 Puma. At the end there is no plastic at all, just a solid metal piece which allows to check the oil level. The only plastic is the yellow handle. Here are two pics..

Hmmmmm..... looks like mine is Special edition. Might see what I can sell it for on ebay.

I had the same thing happen. The yellow handle just came off for no reason. Then I spent to many hours trying to get the dip stick out. Pliers bits of wire and . . . well nothing helped. So in it went to my local friendly garage who took off the sump and pushed it up. A new one from LR was about 20. Yes new oil and filter.

Is this common or are we just the only two?

I had a sort of similar thing. Mine is a metal bottom and the end bottom metal part was cracked in some areas so i peeled of some metal bits to avoid the metal bits being sucked in the tube. So far i am living with it. 15 GBP for a stick!

Lovely. Truck is at dealer for maintenance today. Dealer just called that after they replaced oil and filter, when rechecking the oil level, the end piece of my dipstick appeared to be broken off. The dipstick tube was unscrewed and taken out, but the piece can not be found. Not taking any risks, so truck stays put there while a new sump (and a new dipstick) are being ordered. Apparently it is not possible to take the old sump off and put it back without it leaking afterward as when taking the sump off it supposedly always will deform. It could just be that this broken off piece already evacuated with the old engine oil, but we cannot be sure of that as it is not possible to go search for it in a 200 liter barrel of old engine oil.

Mine is the same as Eric has and 2007 (57).
I tend to when removing the dipstick not just pull it but slightly twist it at the same time.
I feel this reduces stress on it by doing so. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️

I also always pull it up carefully, twisting it if needed, never forcing it. Last time I did was just a few weeks ago and it appeared all solidly together, but now.....

The end of the dip stick on my 2015 Puma is made from aluminium alloy and is swaged onto the steel wire dip stick. Unfortunately being alloy it is no good trying to located it with a magnet, unless of course some of the steel wire is still attached.

I'm assuming you've checked the dip stick tube to ensure it is not stuck inside the tube?

I'm not sure about the puma but most oil pickup pipes have a strainer fitted, if this can be confirmed then I would leave it. Defender 90XS SW
