United Kingdom 2010 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Stornoway Grey
Ripon Land Rover
Just bought a new 110 XS from Ripon Land Rover, very pleased with the whole experience over the last couple of weeks.

In comparison to Stratstone Newcastle who weren't interested in selling anything other than D4's. Ripon offered a professional and personal service that was well worth the two 120 mile + round trips.

Thumbs Up Ripon LR is my local deaer and I must admit that they are be best one I have gone to by far. Nice to see a car park where defenders out number other LRs by 5-1!!

Service there is always a pleasure to deal with,

Glyn

Another vote for Ripon LR, my 90 came from them and they have always been helpful with parts if required!

Beginning to understand that Ripon appear to really specialise in Defenders. Personally I'd amend your copy above to read "Stratstone Newcastle weren't interested in selling anything" - just my experience after a recent visit.

I'd thought that Lloyds in Carlisle were the major suppliers of Defenders to the farming community, as they are based right next door to the livestock market.

Are Ripon the real deal?

To add balance Ripon LR incorrectly diagnosed an auto gearbox fault on my old D3 and took my car on a test drive which involved them going shopping! I had a Blackvue in the vehicle, that's how I know. Service manager who's name escapes me, was very apologetic.

Well as you all know I have one of the Ripon Defender 90 special editions. I have to say I love the car, the design is by far (sorry I'm biassed... Laughing ) the best I've seen for a heritage style Defender.

The after-buying experience was maybe not so good though, I never got the feeling that the salesperson was that interested in me after I placed my order, he never returned my phone calls, always seemed to be "with a customer" or "not at his desk" when I phoned and spun me quite a few yarns about why it took 8 weeks from arriving at the dealership to 'ready' my car. I guess like most adults I get p*ssed when some young upstart thinks he can lie his way out of something perfectly explainable "sorry I forgot to..."

On the up side they have been great since - one small issue with the front bumper and it got sorted pretty quick, even though I'm 250 miles away.

As a side irony my local dealer which happens to be a Stratstones is bloody useless and they ended up doing the warranty work on the Defender bumper! Before I found Ripon LR - which was by pure chance, driving back from Durham one day in a Jag the sat nav showed a JLR dealer so I thought I'd drop in for a toilet break and a coffee just to break up the journey - I'd already been into the local Stratstones who, 1. Knew NOTHING about the Defender or its demise; 2. Couldn't be bothered to get me a price list; and 3. Told me I wouldn't like the Defender because it was too spartan but would I like a new Disco Sport instead?

It strikes me that the Stratstone dealer network is just interested in volume and has no real interest in the product(s) they sell. -------------------------------

My first 110, a 1983 County Station Wagon carried Ripon Land Rover branded number plates and I often wondered what sort of dealer it was. When I bought it it was from Mike Fews at Wotton under Edge who's yard in those days was full of Series and early coil sprung vehicles. Now it's all sanitised and full of the 'posh' stuff. The vehicle was a 2.25 naturally aspirated diesel and a flyer it was not! When about 16 years old it had a rebuild by Warwick 4x4 and gained a 2.5 turbo engine, a mistake, I should have gone for a 200 TDi which Land Rover were just beginning to sell as a re-engining pack for early 110's.

Rather sad news to hear that Lloyd's are integrating Ripon into their portfolio.

Tried a couple of times to engage with the Lloyd's team at Carlisle - was totally underwhelmed. Too much emphasis on whitened teeth, corporate uniforms, lifestyle speak and a total inability to put a competitive deal on the table.

Now that Defender has been dropped from the product range, I wonder if Ripon Farm Services are returning to their core business (agriculture related) and getting out of lifestyle vehicles?
