Cycling London to Brighton
Anyone done it before? I've (possibly foolishly) agreed to do it with a few mates later this year.

Not quite sure what to expect, but I'm assuming it won't be all downhill towards the sea.......

Yep, done it loads.

How hard it is really depends on your fitness and experience.

It's not flat, we go through the Surrey / North and then right at the end the South Downs. Biggest hill is at the end. Laughing (there is an ice cream van at the top though)

Not sure what route we'll be taking... How long on average would you say it takes? I can manage an average of about 15mph on roads at the moment according to the iPhone app...

I'll be doing it on a mountain bike.. don't think I'll be able to afford to get myself a road bike! And 29inch road tyres seem to be hard to get hold of, and expensive!

There's three big hills - North and South Downs and the Sussex Weald (Handcross)
Blow your tyres up as hard at you can get them for minimum rolling resistance.
Usually in mid-June. Could be hot.

I suppose big hills will have big descents on the other side......... Smile

Think it's August we're going to be doing it all being well... One thing I keep forgetting about is we'll be carrying a weekends worth of clothes as well - not something that'll be all that fun if it's roasting...

Have a look at the Coast to Coast ride. Whitehaven to Sunderland. Its very popular and really well supported along the route.

I've done the night and offroad versions of the ride. It's that last hill before Brighton that is the killer 2013 Aintree Green 110 Station Wagon SX

Doing it with others gives you a pick up when going gets tough i did it on my mountain bike no probs its a good laugh

That last hill is scaring me now haha!

There's about 5 of us doing so far, not sure if anyone else is coming along too...

'Training' wise I'm aiming to do at least 10 miles every evening after work, more at weekends.. Slightly easier now my bike is living in my kitchen rather than the parents garage......... Rolling Eyes

Tempted to ride from mine (Barrowford, near Burnley) to Leeds and back along the Leeds Liverpool canal once the weather gets better. Think that'd be just about do-able in a day... I know it's mostly flat and it kinda cheating, but I use top gear most of the time, so in my logic that cancels it out Very Happy

It's easy, just follow a nice bottom in Lycra !

The sheer number of riders means you get plenty of rest at pinch points.

It's definately far easier on road tyres, and do lots of slip-streaming.

Sometimes gets confusing seeing lycra from behind... 'Hmmm, she's got a nice arse'. Turns out its a bloke. Awkward!
