Handbrake
Our handbrake seems to need to pull up a lot further than I would think it should in order to hold the car (about 8 inches-surely it should be less?) Its a Puma, but I guess the Td5 has the same handbrake.

Also, on a steep hill near where we live the car starts to roll down the hill (or kind of 'shudder' down the hill) when you put the clutch in. This doesn't seem right considering the fact that the transmission is supposed to be locked. Any ideas?

Adjust the handbrake.

you can either do it from underneath, or "up top"

if underneath, then park on level ground, chock the wheels. loosen the 19mm nut on the back of the handbrake lever (there's 2, one each side of the bracket) and wind them both "in" a bit, a couple of turns should do it. nip them up, jump in the cab and see how it feels.
repeat as necessary

from "up top", remove middle seat/cubby box, remove 4 screws that hold down the lid. lean in, loosen the lock nuts..... (then same as above)

The shuddering is the shoes slipping in the drum.

normally 3 to 5 clicks of the handbrake ratchet is normal.

i've noticed and at first thought it was a problem that once the hand brake is on if you dip the clutch the vehical moves back an inch or two (if your on a hill) i then realised that this was due to some slack in the drive train (normal) as the hand brake is not locking the rear wheels as in normal cars and this results in a little movement.

Hi, I know about the lurch forward/backwards depending which way your facing. The problem with ours is that it just keeps on rolling! LAND ROVER DEFENDER 110 XS SW 2.4

All handbrakes should operate around 3 clicks...ours used to at 2 until it went for a new clutch now its 3 Mike

I should have said that i also had my hand brake become less afective then found out that there was an oil leak into the drum from the prop shaft seal.

Supposedly, when operating correctly, the transmission brake should operate effectively on the 3rd click.

However, Defender transmission brakes are renowned for not being reliable - mainly because, off road, they fill up the drums with crud and don't hold. If you spend any time with a long suffering owner or instructor, they'll tell you to always leave it in gear on any incline greater than a gentle slope.

Solution: fit an X-brake from x-eng or leave it in gear. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

I left the LR outside yesterday (I usually put it inside in case somebody tries to nick it!) and this morning the car was obviously quite cold. Strangely, the handbrake now operates at about 3-4 clicks, instead of 5-6. It;s been the same all day.

This kind of thing always happens just as you have booked it in to a dealer. I booked it in for something or other (the clutch, I think) about a year ago, and as soon as it comes round to taking it back to them the problem seems to magically disapear, only to return as soon as you get back home!
