This morning when I started up the Puma and she idled while I got things sorted inside, I noticed a rattle that seem to come from between the engine and gearbox. When I depressed the clutch pedal it disappeared. I presume this is the first signs of the clutch giving out? It is not there all of the time. Also noticed a burning smell sometimes which also points me in the clutch direction. Anyway I phoned the dealers for a chat and they suggested that it could be the clutch or the flywheel. I will leave her in next week. Funnily enough the flywheel thing never crossed my mind. Will I ask for the updated patch to be uploaded while she is in or leave her as she is? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Spudfan,

Had the clutch and flywheel replaced to solve the juddering problem when coming to a halt, in June. Didn't work so they replaced the transfer box in October and that seems to have done the trick. They also performed the engine upgrade at the time and it appears to be somewhat smoother. Still have the intermittent "pinking" or knocking however in colder weather which I hoped the upgrade would fix. Local garage approx 5km away. Engine knock usually happens when restarting, after filling up with diesel, and the engine at half working temperature. At all other times it is fine.

Cheers

Thanks for the above. I never had any major issues with the vehicle and it has always run very well. I am not particularly bothered about the new engine management patch as I have no complaints as to how the vehicle runs and have not had faults with it in this area. Having read other posts about the gearbox problem I thought I would get the clutch looked at as soon as I heard the rattle. Might as well use the 3 year warranty! Normally I would let something like this run on to see if it reoccurs but as my wife drives the Puma all the time I do not want her stranded if the clutch goes all of a sudden. My wife has no issues with the vehicle and loves it. I come from the "if it ain't broken etc. etc."school of thought. Anyway I will leave it in next week and if the clutch is replaced well and good. Still there must be something to cause the rattle. Incidentally I get better mpg. when driving on back roads in fourth than I do cruising in 5th or 6th. Must be how the beast is programmed. Incidentally I am glad to see you finally got sorted. You had a rocky ride. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Take your point about "if it's not broken don't fix it", generally a sound philosophy, However, not sure where you would stand from a warranty point of view if you elected not to have the patch downloaded. I'm sure that if it wasn't for the general knowledge we glean from the contributors to this forum we would probably not be told beforehand that a patch was available; they would just apply it anyway at the next service as a matter of course and we would be none the wiser. Might be worth checking with the dealer first.

Had not thought about there being consequences of not accepting "The PATCH". Just wondering if I am over reacting to my one time rattle. Maybe I should just let it as it is and see how things develope. The only niggling point being that it disappeared when I depresssed and released the clutch pedal. That brought suspicion of the possibility that the clutch might be about to play up. Anyone else get this before they opted for a clutch change? Vehicle is still a joy to own and drive. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

My view is that it seems that the TdCi clutches are not quite up to taking the torque of the engine. Some are failing, some are not. If there's a glint of weakening in your clutch, why not get it changed free under warranty? It sounds as though the new clutches are a new version and hopefully then stronger.

That is a distinct possibility, especially as the rattle is not permanent so the odds of them hearing it are remote. When I described it they suggested that it could be either the flywheel or the clutch. I said that it was only intermittent at the moment but that I rather go down under my own steam rather than be towed in at some future point. At my last visit I asked the chief mechanic if they had any common problems with the Puma. He said the only thing of note is that they had replaced a few clutches. Going by that I presume they will change it as a matter of course. Anyway I will e-mail them and explain my case so that there is no ambiguitity. They have already told me to leave it in when on the phone. It will take more than a day so the Puma must be left in with them. Will keep you up to date with the story. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

The woman from Farnell's in Leeds has just phoned me to tell me that It's ready to pick up.The scuffing noise on switch off is "no cause for concern" and as for the occasional power delay from 3rd to 4th,they have not been able to detect it, and no faults were logged. I'll dig a bit deeper when I collect it tonight.

Well, it's back. New EGR valve and new clutch.

Gear changes are MUCH smoother and selecting reverse is now possible without breaking a sweat and dislocating your shoulder.

Driving is a little quieter and generally a little quieter.

No more clunk on clutch release either.

There is still the scuff-scuff noise on shutdown, but it is quieter and less rough sounding. It sounds 'normal' now.

Generally speaking, i'm very pleased. Much better.

My advice - if you're in doubt get it changed. Apparently there's a bulletin about rough clutches and they're happy just to change them under warranty.

I had the revised clutch fitted but that has now failed also - my dealer has sent request to LR UK for further instruction. The technical guy said it seems as if the revised clutch is still not up to the task either.
I am still waiting 1 1/2 months later and no advice yet Neutral Puma 110 - gone
