just had a brilliant idea - sorry.
cos I'm thinking you're probably sick and tired of my woes I think it might be a good idea to have just one topic where I refer to my problems (which I suspect will also include my mental condition which is starting to deteriorate quickly). doing this means you won't be lured into a topic you don't want to read by me putting some fancy title on it.

anyhow I'm no mechanic but I'd like to think I'm not an idiot either.....(I'm sure you've not your own thoughts on that).

anyway back to my next 'problem' - the vicous fan. as you'll probably know its not massively warm outside right now possibly even the wrong side of 0C for a tan. so how comes when I jumps in my car to go round the block c2miles to see if there's any difference after adjusting the intercooler hose there's f'in cold air getting blown thro the rad and onto the engine that ain't even warm?

I thought the fan only worked when warm but then I've never really paid too much attention to it?

The fan in mine starts up the moment I turn the key! So yes, I'm in the sub-tropics, but not that warm in the morning. Truck is 2 months old now and did it from new.
Got the "they all do that" reply when asked if it was normal.

Caterham gives the answer already in his own question.... It's a viscous fan, and not an electric. A viscous fan always works when the engine is on, albeit due to its viscous coupling will work less hard when cold, harder when building heat requires more cooling. Now you can start discussing the pros and cons of changing to an electric fan like a Kenlowe Thumbs Up .... Or use the search engine first... Idea Razz , topic has been covered multiple times Thumbs Up You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

thanks both.

I started the engine up again - about 1 hour later and yes the fan started straight away BUT only slowly which I would imagine to be a problem at all.

my concern was more that while the engine still cold after only a very short trip the fan was going bannas (felt like it was trying to blow the engine away - not just cool it) which seems wrong when the engine is already cold?

is there any way of checking correct operation?

I understand how the viscous aspect of it works (or at least I think I do) - but I understand there may be some method for allowing it to 'lock up' / direct drive - could this be sticking / locking up when it shouldn't?

When the engine is entirely cold and with contact off try to move the fan with your hand. If it moves, all should be ok. If it is locked at such a moment, your viscous coupling is not working properly.
I also have it that when cold starting in the morning, the fan starts initially running very fast to the point that you can easily hear that inside the cabin. But it then settles to a much lower speed rather quickly.
As long as the fan is not locked as per above, wouldn't worry. It is quite normal for a Puma in the winter to warm up very slowly, in my case for instance, when driving the 10 km to the office in the winter, (at 20 to max 60km/hr) it can take 8 km before the temp needle gets anywhere close to the middle, and when getting into town and in stop and go traffic again, it drops back to close to cold often.
I also was worried in the beginning when the car was new and my dealer were so kind to replace the temp sensor under warranty, but nothing really changed. In the meantime from threads about this issue, I think it is safe to assume that this is normal.
Just check the locking when cold and off as said above, and then just don't worry, be happy Thumbs Up You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

thanks ericvv

the fan will rotate freely when engine is off / cold.

as above just can't understand why the fan would be operating at max speed after a 5 min journey ?

will try again later today but I've not noticed before (not been listening for it tho - will be now).

hopefully as you've suggested all is well Thumbs Up

have a good day.

All viscos fans blow quite hard when first started in the morning then as the plates warm up they work as they should ie freewheeling, then when they get hot they lock to give the desired affect of fan to cool engine. All the land rovers i have ever had have done this, bib whooshing sound from the fan just down through the village when cold then off on the bypass then the only other time i ever hear them is after pulling off a motorway on a hot day or towing heavy. If you only do small town journeys in the winter take it off but be ready to put it back on for a long run or the summer. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Caterham,

As difficult as it may seem try not to find fault where there is none. I understand your concerns and worries with your historical woes. Drive it, enjoy it, squeeks, rattles, idiosyncracies 'n' all! As it's backed up by warranty I'd wager it's the dealers that are cr4pping themselves at the prospect of your vehicle and yourself turning up at their premises yet again!!!!

Shocked Thumbs Up Laughing If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!
