HELP - DAB
Big Cry installed my jvc headunit with add on DAB tuner.

extrememly pleased with the reception outside my house and all along the m62 to manchester, however coming back over woodhead pass and then a trip to heanor down the m1 on another day and the reception is terrible.

i have replaced the telscopic aerial with a dab aerial and reading the info on DABonwheels they suggest that wing mounting will affect reception.

i picked an aerial that had 6 stars according to their site, although it was not the most expensive one i could have bought.

fm reception is just as bad when DAB reception is poor.

anyone got any pictures showing the inside of the roof at the fron without the headlining (2011 Puma). i am seriously considering moving the aerial to the front of the roof in ht emiddle above the rear view mirror mount or there abouts.

comments and advice greatfuly received.

DAB transmission is good in most areas but there are acknowledge issue areas where reception is weak. So it might not be your set up, just a poor signal.

The claim is 95% of populated areas. Which ovviously very different to 95% of geographical coverage.

There's a metal rib running front to back in the centre of the roof that would cause problems fitting an aerial there, unless you fitted it off centre then no problem (but ugly)

I travel over Woodhead, then M1 to Leeds and DAB reception is brilliant. In fact I travel a lot, and with a very few exceptions, and then only for a few 100's of yards, the reception on DAB is much better than medium wave.

This is in my D4.

Which aerial did you fit ?

Wing mounting isn't as good as roof mounting but you shouldn't have problems on major routes like the M1. Which multiplex/radio station were you tuned into ? If you weren't tuned into a national multiplex that would give you that kind of problem (although FM should still work of course.) http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

I fitted one where my old aerial was and for most areas it is good, but in my back yard it loses reception totally as it does on a few lengths along the A40 between Huntley & Ross on Wye, not sure if I want to move it up to the roof Mad Optimists say the glass is half full..
Pessimists say the glass is half empty..
Engineers say the glass is twice the size it needs to be!

If the puma roof is the same as a 300tdi roof then I can take a photo tomorrow for you as my headlining is out at the moment. And I have a DAB aerial positioned just next to my rear view mirror (not connected up though!).

My Kenwood dab aerial is fitted in front of the sunroof as you can see in the picture below, the only places i loose reception is Cornish fishing villages, and last week it was struggaling in the Calder Valley South of Burnley North of Halifax. But everywhere else North Wales, Scotland etc etc fine.

My DAB aerial is just slightly off centre due to the middle rib on the underneath of the roof..

Personally myself I don't know why they don't fit a roof aerial from the factory and do away with the wing mount one. So very dated by today's standards and wouldn't cause any issue if it wasn't a long one. This is partly the reason why I Never hardly use the radio because when you feel like it driving along you can't unless you've pre planned it and extended the aerial out first. Then even if you do some little tyke will probably break it off or a branch or something may clip it. I think DAB roof mounted aerials are the way to go.

What you've got to remember is that the Defender is very much the poor relation in the Land Rover stable these days. There are lots of things that could be updated but LR have no interest in doing so unless they absolutely have to. Darren

Thanks all for your responses.

I fitted a kinetic aerial from dabonwheels. I had some dialogue with them and they said the only difference between the one I chose and a more expensive one was the fact that it was made in china. Since almost everything seems to be made there I took a punt. I may see if they will exchange it for a more expensive one.

Any thoughts on drilling a large whole in that rib to get a socket through to tighten the nut, I am a bit OCD about symmetry.

I was struggling to get anything in places, even FM. I was trying to listen to the afternoon drama on R4.

DerbyWill, I couldn't get anything in McDonald's car park in heanor, perhaps you could let me know if you can.

The aerial is amplified. Maybe it isn't earthed properly.

Thanks for the pics warping, how easy is it to get the headlining out?

Your not alone I would be thinking the same. Thumbs Up Got to be careful that the integrity of the structural support isn't compromised though. I.e. the smaller the hole the better. Better make sure it's damned well sealed too. Rolling Eyes

On a different note anyone tried on of those aerials that connect to a regular FM HU to convert over to DAB? Rather than just buying a DAB HU which I wouldn't be interested in. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

I have a Kenwood windscreen powered aerial. Perfect reception in the Welsh valleys and Mid Wales, M4 corridor and London. Use the original aerial on the wing as a height indicator for car parks that are close to the 2.01m roof height of my 90. Rolling with laughter LANDYWATCH
