Guided Self Drive Kruger Park
Being a lover of South Africa and especially Kruger this trip just looks the dogs danglies.

Also being my 40th next year, I see a special holiday coming (I took my other half to Kruger for her 40th).

Just wondering if anyone else has done this???? It's a Self Drive in a Expedition prep'd Landy complete with roof tent, 7 days guided around Kruger.

You don't need a landy in the Kruger, 95% can be done in a sedan Thumbs Up --

Naks, Think you're missing the point a bit there.

Not sure on the routes they take and appreciate that a lot of the land is privately owned by the lodges, however, a lot of the places I've been in Kruger, you wouldn't get a car through.

Anyway, its not about the terrain, its more about the experience. I can drive 10 miles away to play on the rough stuff. Also, I suppose the Peak District can be done 95% in a car, but we all choose to take our trucks on the 5% that doesn't. Craig Rogers

SWMBO would love a trip like that without a doubt. Seems quite reasonably priced as well for what you get! A recommendation is far better than any publicising in my book too! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Namibia, along with Botswana are on the must visit list.

However, as you did, a longer stay is required. We are a little tied at home to spend anymore than about 10 days away, so for now we have to stick with smaller trips and Kruger gives us that opportunity a little better.

Plus, we love the place!

Howevever, your Namibia trip photos look awesome! Thumbs Up Craig Rogers

Just had a quick look at that and prices seem to be for 2011, is it all up to date or am I missing something?

I've emailed them for an update on the prices, but yet to hear back. Wondering if they actually still operate.

I will phone them if I don't hear back soon. Craig Rogers

I can give you the contact details of a couple of alternate firms in the Joburg area if you need them. Have used them both personally. Not Land Rovers though Crying or Very sad One uses Hilux's and Mitsubishis, the other Isuzus and Rangers.

If you're going to Kruger it might be worth treating yourself to a night in one of the tented camps, just for the experience. These are run by Sanparks, and are similar to the ones you'd get on an exclusive safari. Proper beds, ensuite bathroom, etc, all in a purpose-designed canvas safari tent. However, MUCH cheaper than a private safari. We stayed in one for a few days in Marakele National Park (a little west of Kruger in the Kransberg Mountains).

I had some business in Joburg last year and took my family out with me. We'd already done the full self-drive, fully equipped safaris into Bots and Zim, and we only had a week, so I set about researching whether we coud do a cheap mini-safari using just a rented car and fixed accommodation. We had a two-wheel-drive Hyundai SUV from Europcar, and stayed in tented camps and lodges. It was great. In the dry season you don't really need 4WD to get around the parks - just high ground clearance. Our main ports of call were Marakele National Park, and the Shingwedzi Cheetah Reserve, which was awesome. We had two nights in one of their self-contained lodges right in the middle of the reserve. £80 a night, but it slept eight and was fully equipped and had its own pool. There are just four of them in the reserve, all in different places.

Thumbs Up Thanks for that, but its Land Rover only for me I'm afraid, it sort of takes the edge off for anything else.

Mind sound strange, but the whole reason I got rid of my "Jap-Crap" and replace it with a 110 was after going around Kruger in a Defender.

As mentioned in a previous post. There are certainly part of Kruger where both ground clearance and 4wd would be required, especially driving across dried river beds. Craig Rogers

Yeh, I get that. Thumbs Up Somehow though, when you see all the SA locals driving around in their Hilux's, etc, they don't seem as bad as when you see them over here. I think it's partly because the mod/accessory market for Bakkies is so much more developed over there.

I'm sure one of the moderators will grab me from behind and muffle me in a minute, but I have to say I was dead impressed with the Ford Ranger that I hired over there. We had the supercab version, with a purpose designed stainless steel camping canopy on the back and rooftent on top. On board water tanks and auxiliary fuel tanks plus some spare jerries. We did a South-to-North crossing of the Central Kalahari Game reserve in it, followed by Maun to Kasane via Moremi, Savuti and Chobe. (Now that DID need 4WD!). The only problem we had was getting stuck in the river in Moremi, but that was more Pilot Error! (Oh, and I broke a spring Embarassed ) 2012 Defender Utility Wagon

Brilliant, sounds fun. Oh don't get me wrong, my L200 was very capable, just didn't have the same appeal. Plus the fact that a 110 is far more practical for my needs..

Not sure, where or what we'll end up doing yet and have a bit of time as it'll be next year. Craig Rogers

From my experience they won't rush to reply, a real 'do it tomorrow' place. I booked and paid for bike hire in Cape Town SA, close to the date of arrival I emailed & called to confirm opening times etc took about a week for a reply. Thumbs Up I've also been looking to hire a LR in SA but as Tarrel said its a lot easier to hire a Hilux Big Cry

I'd understand that if it was a SA company, but they are a UK company. Craig Rogers
