Defender 110 puma buying advice !
Hi

Quick intro : Brit living in France for the last 20+ years, I have had the Land Rover "illness" for years now and do all my own repairs etc ..... Currently own a 110 sw 200tdi, freelander TD4, Discovery TD5 amongst others!

Currently selling the Disco to buy a newer 110 sw and am highly tempted by a Puma as early ones are the same price as if not cheaper than TD5's here n France and do like the new dash/rear seats as we have 3 kids.

My questions are.

1: Can all electronic faults/problems be sorted with somthing like nanocom or faultmate ?? as we are 2hrs from a local stealer any besides I DON,T do garages Shocked

2: Can a remap i.e power upgrade, disable speed limiter & EGR be done by post/distance ??

3: Could or has it been done to fit a 200,300tdi or TD5 engine and boxs be fitted if things went belly up ??

4: Has the clutch problem been eventualy sorted and how do you know that it's been done with one that's not going to drop in bit's again ??

I love my Defender 200 tdi to bit's, its my daily work vehicle, goes in the mud at off road events, has taken 5 people with all the kit to Portugal & Morocco (x2) but is 22 years old! My dream is to rebuild it on a galva chassis.

Thanks in advance

Jason

Hello Jason,

1, Faults can be read/reset by a variety of interfaces no problem. They won't necessarily sort them as they obviously won't fix a broken sensor, but they will tell you what sensor to change.

2, Yes

3, You could but why would you? The Ford engine is better in all ways to the earlier engines ( stands back and watches the fireworks ...... Ooh pretty).

4, Yes, the early 07 to 58 plates had issues most have been replaced now (mine has and I've had no issues since). If you look at the clutch survey on here my opinions can be verified.

All of the above are my opinion and I'm sure others will disagree.

Do it - get one you won't be disappointed!!!

When I changed from td5 the puma was completely different to drive. The engine revs differently and the gearbox is nothing like the 380 or 77. But once you got a few miles on the clock I think you wouldn't go back.

The puma engine and gearbox are really good. If you do any low box work its fantastic.

There will be always be things going wrong but hasn't there always been.

Thanks a lot for your replies Very Happy

I spent all last night on here (great forum by the way Very Happy ) reading up on the Puma and believe it or not was not put off Razz

I can remember when nobody wanted TD5's & all their electrickery, I've had one for 4 years and never had a problem.

Like I said my only concern is fixing it as taking it to a garage in any shape or form is not an option.

Cheers

Jason

No need for a Disco transfer box in a Puma, it has a six speed gearbox and, if I remember correctly, 1.2:1 transfer ratio already.

Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !!
2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold
2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold

Cheers Guys !

And what about this special gizmo you need to change the derv filter ?? Does that also mean that if you run dry there's no way of getting going again with out the same gizmo ??

Was talking to a guy in Morocco last year that got a load of crap in his puma tank whilst filling up with diesel and it took the local garage 10hrs to get it going again Shocked
