Hi Andy,
I recommend speaking to Jim at 4x4cb.com He is a true CB enthusiast and been around for years, he will give you an unbiased opinion based on your requirements. I don't get a 'kick back' in fact I've never met him in person but over the last 10 years plus I must have bought half a dozen rigs off him and always been delighted by the service As for actual brands, I've tried most and really like the Cobra and Midland stuff |

Whatever set you get, get one with auto squelch, it's a great feature. Was running a TTI and that was very good but fancied something better, now run a president Johnson 2, and it is good, but can't lock channel so keep changing it via buttons on mic, and is a pain as only has short wire on mic. Another vote for Jim at 4x4cb.com. Knows his stuff and is a long time LR owner.
As for a CB itself, it depends what you want (and your budget). For a fixed installation I'd probably go with a Midland unit - something like the 248, perhaps. Lots of features and excellent quality. in recent years though I've taken to using a handheld unit for its' flexibility. I've got two - a Maycom, which is great, and also a Midland 42 as it's available with a car kit that allows a semi-permanent installation if required. It's good you guys recommend Jim. I recently had dealings with him on my daughters behalf (budget CB for her 90) and he was a thoroughly excellent and knowledgable chap. Certainly have no qualms about putting my business his way again!
CB's don't seem expensive so budget isn't the restraint, it's more quality and USEABLE functionality I'm after, not bells and whistles that you'll never use. I'm upgrading from an old Midland 98 plus, but have nothing against Midland per-say! Has anyone tried one of the remote head unit CB's (TTI TCB-R2000/Albrecht AE6890)? If so, were they difficult to locate in a Defender? The idea is to tuck away the main unit, but you've still got to plug in the mic and listen to the speaker - sort of defeating the object! Andy. |

Many thanks bpman. In the end I did buy an Albrecht, the AE6891...similar to the AE6890, but the mic connects to the front panel, not the main box.

Do you mind me asking where you got it from? I saw them a while ago, but can't remeber for the life of me where it was  An engine to TDi for!

What are peoples views of CB vs PMR?
Haven't used a cb for many many years but more recently have dabbled with pmr when doing road runs in convoy. |

Convoy is the only time I use mine...green lanes and all that! I suppose there's not much to choose, but I do find CB (with a decent ariel) has more range which is helpful when one of the group (or me) misses a turn.

Well CB can be up to 4 watts and PMRs are restricted to 0.5 watts, so in theory you should get more range out of a CB.
CB's probably easiest, as it's what practically everyone else uses. |
