Transfer Box Leak
Went in to dealer for its first annual service. Slight leak from front of Transfer Box. Dealer service department said it is a gearbox out job for this to be changed and TB has to be split form gearbox to change it? Seems like a lot of grief for a TB front seal.

Hi Taff

You have obviously never removed a LR gearbox Very Happy

Actually, my local dealer just did the seal on my TD5, they had it in overnight and I picked it up next day FOC as the recon box was less than 12 months old that they fitted under warranty.

I would assume that they will probably just remmovethe transfer box from the back of the main box, but remember that means removing propshafts, disconnecting handbrake, possibly remove exhaust, any under body protection, drain the tb, then remove that. Then of course there is the reassemby too. He who dies with the most toys wins Smile

This is the first one I have ever owned with a warranty. Have driven ones in Kenya but it did not matter what leaked out of them. Will keep you posted. Getting work done in a week or so.

Hi adiep, mine is a 2006 TD5 with extended warranty, do you still have extended warranty? if so try them.

When I bought it 18 months ago from the dealer it came with the warranty and after I complained about finding it hard to engage 3rd and reverse they agreed and changed the box with no quibble.

It was only last October I noticed drops of oil on thedrive and after crawling underneath found the bottom of the transfer case coverred in EP90.

Fortunatly I had just extended the warranty again (£460 a year) which I was was sceptical about at the time but in th case if the transfer oil seal I think paid for it self.

So if you have any warranty left try the dealer. They will warn you that they charge you for an investigation, but that is waived if it is coverred under warranty. He who dies with the most toys wins Smile
