Netherlands 2016 Defender 110 Other SW Galway Green
Varta AGM G14 or Optima Yellow Top battery?
My 130 Puma starts slow at cold mornings so I will replace the battery. I have narrowed my choice down to a Varta AGM G14 and a Optima Yellow Top. Any ideas or suggestions? I have a Baja Designs LED bar installed and in a few weeks a Webasto Thermotop EVO 5 will be fitted. No further heavy electrical gear. 2021 Defender 110 D300 HSE

Personally unless you have serious electrical loads such as a powerful winch then I would stick to standard type batteries. Okay, I appreciate that it is an advantage for some owners you just have to weigh up if you think it's suitable or not. I'm running the standard LR battery with 16A draw spots and approx 40A amp running off it with not even the slightest issue. LED's also as far as I am aware don't draw much power compared to output of any size so I wouldn't worry about that too much..

I bought a yellow top some years ago for out VW bus. The auxiliary heating kept killing batteries in winter but the yellow top is more deep-cycle stable. Have you checked the cranking current? I seem to remember it's a bit lower than with "normal" batteries.

Interesting. Which type do you use and are any modifications needed to fit them in the standard battery holder? 2021 Defender 110 D300 HSE

Can not comment on the Varta battery.

Have used both Optima Yellowtop and Odyssey batteries. Prefer Odyssey over Optima Yellowtop.

Odyssey 1500 should drop right in with no modification. Now if I remember figures correctly the Optima Yellow top is a 55 amp hr battery whereas the 1500 is a 68 Am hr battery

Optima is 680 CCA whereas the Odyssey 1500 whereas is 850 CCA

In the UK there is little price difference between the Optima and the Odyssey so in UK I would say Odyssey.

I can confirm the optima is an odd shape - needed a longer earth strap in the VW Rolling Eyes
Optima may have better deep-cycle performance?

Switzerland 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SVX Station Wagon Santorini Black
A Varta AGM G14 is a 95Ah battery. How does that compare with the Ah of a standard battery in a Puma? I know that a German based site sponsor is offering a dual battery system exactly with this Varta AGM G14 and with a Varta AGN E39 battery which then again is a 70Ah battery. Not sure which of the two is used there as starting battery, and which one is for secondary power take off.

Below is a UK site where you can buy those two batteries, interesting they are shown on the same web page.
Different dimensions of course. Would either of them be a direct drop in as single battery in a Puma when needing to replace the original battery? If the bigger G14 would be a direct replacement, is it worth paying the £45 premium for it over the Varta E39?

Asking this because I am sure Varta batteries are as good as it gets, and after 4 years my own OEM battery one of these days may be up for replacing too.

I have 2 PC1500's in a D44 twin battery holder - a PC1500 is the same size as the original Land Rover battery. If I knew what I was doing - I would be scared!

i would suggest the odessey pc1500 battery personally think its the best you can get iv had yellow tops and they havnt lasted

Well, starting was very difficult this morning and I needed the car for work today so I drove to the shop for a replacement battery. They only had the Varta AGM G14 battery in stock so I opted for that. Install was easy because the dimensions are the same as the LR battery.

For the record: the original LR battery fitted was a 90Ah. 2021 Defender 110 D300 HSE

this may be a bit off topic, or not, but my ex-Td5 (wich I bought new in December 1999) had a Varta battery (it had the LR logo along with the Varta logo). Can't remember how many Ah had...
I sold my Td5 without ever changing or even recharging it! It had 10 years old and still going strong! Regards

I don’t have all the electrickery you guys fit, but I’ve never had to replace a Land Rover battery, the longest I’ve kept a vehicle/original battery was 11 years.

So if nothing else, LR have fitted (until now, at least) pretty good batteries from new.
