Take it for a run, if the expansion tank is still cold maybe you've got an airlock. Have you had any major disturbance with the cooling system of late? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

thanks.

not mud in rad - it's been pressure washed

no signs of water leaks

not over heating .. just getting hotter than usual

rad is warm - so probably thermostat working .. maybe not opening enough ?

i need to run the engine and look to see if water moving in header tank ?

Sounds very much like the water isn't being circulated, so pump would be my guess. I've seen a couple of pumps where the vanes have corroded away to the extent that they just don't push the water around anymore. Darren

@LRA - thats my thought at the moment, I will check to see if the water is moving in the pipes and heater tank

also - check for air locks

Does the heater work?
That would show circulation.

before you strip out the thermostat it would be worth checking for an air lock. if i recall bleed radiator top plug first and then the plug on top of the thermostat housing. BM52

good call bm52 - yes I will try that first, so is that the brass plug next to the thermostat or the plug ontop of the radiator (probably the plug ontop of the radiator) Thumbs Up

from the workshop manual..

1. Remove plastic plugs from thermostat housing
and radiator.
2. Fill cooling system with 50% - 50% of
water/anti-freeze mixture.
3. Fill from expansion tank until radiator is full, with
level in expansion tank the same as in radiator.
NOTE: Care should be taken to avoid
excess coolant spillage from radiator.
4. Fit plastic plug in radiator.
5. Add a further 1 litre (1.76 pints) of coolant to
expansion tank and allow to settle.
6. Refit expansion tank cap and thermostat
housing plug.
7. Run engine at idle speed for five minutes.
8. Switch off engine, check that expansion tank
coolant is level with top of indicator post and top
up as necessary. BM52

bm - thanks for the list, I ran thru the procedure and the engine is normal however the expansion tank is still cool / cold, been on a 5 mile run and temp stays in middle. maybe it was an airlock. certainly going to keep a close eye on it.

I think because its not used much the thermostat was stuck closed ? I took the brass plug out of the radiator housing and squeezed the pipes and the fluid is moving when each hose is squeezed (so thermostat is open) and the coolant moves about in the expansion tank so it does not look like there are any blockages

taking her out on the plains tonight, so we'll see how she behaves Thumbs Up
