Ireland 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 CSW Stornoway Grey
who needs a re-map ? Not me !
For the half-term hols we treated ourselves to a week with my in-laws in Upminster, London.
For a change we traveled with P&O's overnight ferry from Dublin to Liverpool which was excellent - sure beats Stena line (which is what we've always used)

So we got off the ferry at 6.00am yesterday morning and, heading along the M62, M6, M1 and M25 we made it in four hours flat. The last time we did this journey was in August 2011 when we first bought our Puma so we were taking it easy but yesterday I did most of the journey at 110 - 120 kph.

I am always amazed at how, after a long journey, I have no numbness, stiffness, aches or pains in the Puma - I always had one of these symptoms in my previous 'ergonomic' cars but the real surprise was how the engine performed. Maybe things have loosened up after 20000km but it just flew. Instant response in 6th on gradients, easy overtaking, lots of time in the fast lane - it was just such fun !

I have often been tempted to go for a re-map but when the 110 blasts along this well on std tune I wouldn't be willing to expose the drive train to the additional stress extra bhp/torque might bring. In Ireland I don't often go beyond 100kph but this was one 4 hr exhilarating jaunt - plus all on just slightly more than half a tank of derv. Mightily impressed. What an awesome machine. Bow down

just checked. 397.6km (didn't go anywhere today) which is approx 247 miles. I reckon thats about 27-28 mpg with 2 adults, 2 kids and luggage, heavy right foot and 75 mph most of the time. Not bad Cool

I'm with you, rossy, I don't want a re-map either. I'm happy being the tortoise (not that it's that slow, certainly more capable than my Smart or Bipper van).

I've not had a remap, but the standard engine lacks grunt.

Today I was bogged in a grassy field with 4 wheels spinning, the 2.4 tdci was really struggling to haul the beast along

Sounds like its the tyres. What do you use, GGs? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

Yeh I have crap tyres, but they grip enough to bog the engine on occasion unless its in first low, to be honest it's often turbo lag/poor throttle response when it's in 2nd/3rd

If the 2.4 had insufficient torque/power in standard tune for its weight it would have stalled, not have ALL 4wheels spinning. As Bigwheels stated you have a big problem with traction. Either tyres need changing or you were in the wrong gear and using too many revs on take off. Big Cry
If tyres are OK then maybe an Offroad driving course might be in order.
I have absolutely no problem towing a 25ft/7 birth caravan up a grass field, in the wet, with a 30 degree uphill slope. Absolutely no problem. Low box, 2nd gear on Tickover. Standard Tune. Oh there were 4adults in car. 90XS. Thumbs Up LANDYWATCH

I'm using the tyres it shipped with as standard in 2010 and they have completed 29,000 miles from new. Still have about 9mm tread left. Im afraid I don't drive slowly. Like to be in front if possible but do take the caravan to lots of out of the way CL sites and the Defender has never failed unlike many other 4x4's. Thumbs Up LANDYWATCH

Funny how the Defender is the most un-ergonomical car I've ever owned, yet its the only one I can step out of after a long journey and be ache free.

Agree with the performance too, as long as I keep the turbo spinning, and time the gear changes right on twisty roads or in traffic it'll absolutely fly, and very rarely needs to hit 3000rpm. Effortless!
