GPS systems!
I am looking at getting a GPS system for offshore use...

I wondered if anyone was using a Netbook for navigation (for me it would be a Netbook with Open CPN & CM93 charts, used with a GPS dongle).

Battery drain would be higher than a 5" Garmin GPS for instance but that shouldn't be a problem on the boat and having a Netbook on board for E-mails etc would be a real bonus. A 10" screen would be the big bonus for detail.

What do you think? or maybe an Ipad2...

Hi Zag,

I use these alot..... Tell them what you want and what you are trying to achieve and I'm sure they'll help you out. Or 'pm' me with your exact requirements and I'll make the call for you next week. I know your vessel is in a different league but I do have an excellent working relationship with them and information is free.

Thumbs Up

Thanks for the replies the IPad does seem to be preffered over a netbook and you can get Imray charts for south coast for about £30. I'll look into the MM ones Dobby also Very Happy

Cheers Mal, but think these guys would expect me to have a Destroyer or a Ferry for their business going by their site Shocked I'll maybe give them a buzz though Thumbs Up

As mentioned 'different league' but even with the enthusiast they are willing to share experience and expertise free of charge.

How about some armaments perhaps and electronic warfare capacity. BAe may be able to help. Laughing

Seems like you may have had the solution sorted in your first post. No harm in bouncing the idea about. What's this IPad/IPod malarky? I'm still using a Sony Walkman Sports Cassette with FM radio.... Cool If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Yes, worth a look. I 'sampled them a few years back.. Was very impressed. I used OS maps for flying, which was really novel at the time.
