Germany 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Baltic Blue
I'll be using my heated front screen, -30 washer additive and HeatShot when it gets to -20ish in Bavaria this Winter - need all the help I can get.
If something cracks, I'll post it on the forum as empirical evidence and to warn others...but only if there's evidence.
I've only lived here 18 years but I know the Winters enough to hate driving in them Sad Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

HeatShot system works for me.
I had the HeatShot system fitted during the last of the terrible two winters we experienced recently. I thought anything was better than suffering the constant frozen washers and scraping of the screen at stupid-o-clock in the mornings!
I must say Ive been so impressed with HeatShot. It clears the screen really quickly in the mornings and ive always got water available to clear the spray from the car in front. Ive found that its so much better in the summertime aswell, it really does help to get rid of those flies that commit suicide on the windscreen!
I certainly have no complaints.

I have one of these fitted to the Patrol and it is the only easy way of clearing the middle of the screen.

If you are happy to order through Amazon.com you can pick them up in the US for about £40.

Perhaps we can talk Brendan into ordering a few to compete with the Terrafirma distribution.

They used to be licensed by Webasto as the Hot Shot and regularly sold for £99.

£99 Shocked
I paid nearly 200 Euros for my Terrafirma model from the UK a year ago - still can't see them cheaper.
I do know there were some revisions in recent years to address some "alleged" safety issues.
Would be great for members to get them that cheap Thumbs Up

*Edit* As you say, if this is the same model

You do get the impression that Terrafirma may have looked at the maximum price they think someone would pay and then marketed it at that.

I suspect they buy these in at £25 a pop.

I spoke to someone that knew the factory that manufactured them for Webasto and these are exactly the same units, I have both brands and have looked at the Terrafirma one, they all look the same and the specs are identical.

I also tried to buy in from America after seeing the heatshot units on Amazon, however like a previous poster they would not ship to the UK. I ended up buying mine from heatshot.com
Apparantly there is a difference between the UK version and the ones from the states. The fuses in the US are huge cartridge fuses where as the UK ones are automotive waterproof blade fuses. I also found out that the USA ones are old stock/previous models of the system containing old compnents and outdated software. The US ones also dont work on cars with smart charge or stop/start systems. (USA are a little behind Europe in the technology race!!) The ones available in the UK from heatshot can be fitted to any vehicle.
Im certainly happy with mine and it has been a very useful bit of kit over the last week or so with the weather being how it is!

The US ones are identical to Webasto stock, which I have used on various vehicles for over ten years.

Be aware that the water can still freeze in the feed tubes to the heating element in the Heatshot, my advice is to fit them as near the jets as you can.

There are two settings, one is hot on demand and the other is a timed burst of warm water that repeats about five times (or until you stop it), which i suspect is designed to de-ice a windscreen.

Where they work really well for a Defender is when there is enough water around to freeze onto the wipers, the combination of hot shot and heated screen works to give you visibility.

I must confess to a somewhat childish pleasure watching the windscreen steam as the water flows onto the screen. I checked that no windscreens have ever broken using these heaters and i couldn't find any examples.

the thing with extreme cold climates is the batteries in the truck don't charge or keep their charge as well as warmer climates, so a heated screen will draw 13amps and the heatshot 60amps - its all draw on the battery

I would say it depends on the battery more than anything else for such things, but if you can wrap the battery in a decent battery blanket and also dont forget to cover the TOP and BOTTOM of it as much as possible and think about a 2nd battery with split charge if you dont already have one and have it in the car somewhere where heat can get to it as the cabin warms up Smile (being a defender though tepid may be a better word though!) Defender envyer Smile

You don't need a bigger alternator

you don't need a heatshot

Ronny is talking the most sense on this subject.
