Good dealer for 1st service in Essex
My 2.4 90 is due its first service at the beginning of September and I would rather not have to schlep into Sidcup to take it to the dealer I bought it from. My local dealer is Lookers in Chelmsford but I've not been too impressed with them in the past. Anyone recommend a good dealer in the Chelmsford/Colchester area?

Many thanks

James

Taylors of Dunmow is an LR approved service centre and cheaper than a franchise dealership with sales to subsidise. My 1st service was over £140 cheaper than the nearby Lookers. D300 HSE 110

Sorry to be boring but you have a warranty to think about. It's illegal for the dealer to refuse to sort a warranty claim but that doesn't mean they'll won't make it a whole load harder if your service book is stamped by someone else. You'll save £150 or so by using a local chap (which I'll certainly do once the warranty is up, probably Foleys) but you have to ask yourself how many warranty claims you'll be making in the next two years and if that £150 is worth paying for speed and easy of claims. Of course you don't know how many claims you'll be making, it could be money saved or wasted.

I've made one claim on mine so far, the back of the bumper had rusted and when I called in to report if they didn't even look at it, just ordered up a new one without problems. They could have been difficult if I wasn't known to be a regular customer. Reading through this forums posts I decided to pay the money, keep them happy and make things easier for myself, just in case.

Just had the first service done on my 90 yesterday. Had quote of £499 from one dealer and £366 from my local dealer until I queried it and was told that they would price match from any garage doing a like for like service using genuine parts etc. In the end I paid just £210, had the vehicle picked up and dropped off by their drivers whilst I was at work , had a complementery wash and polish and inside hoovered, and the piece of mind that the service book has been stamped by a land rover dealership and the anti corrosion inspection has been carried out (an important factor to remember for the 6yr corrosion warranty) 15 plate 2.2SW XS

Matt
well done I achieved simular savings by bartering with Stratstone (official LR dealers do occasionally admit to price matching) For anyone whom has not yet had a first service I think this should be about the figure to aim for. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

I had the same thing last year with my Shogun. engine went bang in spectacular style when the timing chain snapped (because a chain guide broke off), eventhough the service book was fully stamped, it wasn't all by a main dealer, so i was told that i "didn't have loyalty to the brand" and to politely go forth and multiply.

so much for reliable Jap stuff and customer service!

Btw it was also Stratstones where I had it serviced. They aren't completely useless as some people make out Wink 15 plate 2.2SW XS

Matt, can you give me some more info re the price you paid with Stratstones - did they price match another dealer, if so which one? At the moment they've quoted £360 inc. Any help gratefully received! Cheers, Nick Defender 2.2 2013

They first wanted £366 inc but I queried if they price matched and they would against any garage who would use genuine parts and service according to the schedule. I got quotes from 3 Independents and £210 was the lowest. I told them and gave garage name (mark smith Bicester) and that was the price I paid. Stratstones offer a free collection and drop off service and every vehicle that leaves their workshop is washed and polished foc. I also had a little bit of warranty work done and the seatbelt bolt recall issue sorted whilst it was in. After a very bad experience last time with their service side, this has restored a little confidence in me that they are capable to work on my 90 without causing further problems Whistle And as others have said, any warranty issues that may arise should not be a problem as they have serviced it.
Given the choice, for the same price, or even a little more, I would have it serviced by a dealer over others any day especially as they will pick up on, and fix warranty work at the same time, stamp the book (useful for resale value), use genuine parts only and carry out the annual corrosion inspection. Finally a big Thumbs Up For Stratstones service side (ATM Wink ) 15 plate 2.2SW XS
