Hi ashtrans

Could you explain to us that aren't experts in diffs what it is that is really bad in the contact pattern shown? I'm only a 10 minute google search expert and from that it looks that the contact is a bit high on the tooth but well centered. Or is it that it seems to be such a small contact area?

I'm about to get a new rear diff put in this week and I am wondering is it common practice to blue up a gear prior to instalation to check it, or do most dealers Ass-U-Me they are right from factory?

Cheers

Mark

Hi,

yes the contact is too high, seen by the sharp line at the tip of the tooth, this will focus the load here and is likly to cause noise,

dealers don't blue up gears, they take them out the box and fit them on the car. The guy on assembly at the factory should be checking this contact patch but this one wasn't checked very well,

for more contact patch info have a look at page 14,15 and 16 here,

Guess what happened when we were driving back from Chester on Thursday.

Pulled up at a set of lights and heard the clunk clunk clunk noise. Rear diff again I think this is the 6th Evil or Very Mad

Good effort (not)

Is there a case for them to pay for upgraded components now...surely it must be cheaper for them Mike

Damn.. sorry to hear all fo this bad news.. this stuff makes me worry.. I haven't heard any strange noise fromt eh rear or the front. And I drive up and down a mountain every day..

One good thing about this thread, and that is I'm learnign a lot fo stuff. We need a section just for this kind of stuff. Example, HOW TO Secton..

Would help me a lot.

Thanks,

Hmmm - my rear diff has started to hiss on over run and there has been a definite clonk on taking up and backing off the power for a few months. I mentioned the clonk to the main dealer when they had the vehicle back a while back and they said it was the rear brake pads moving in the callipers. I've since checked them myself and there is no more or less play than there was in any of my pre Puma motors.

if it was the pads you would get the clonk on pushing the brake pedal not on taking up drive.

clonk could also be the trailing arm bushes mine have delaminated at 4k miles!!!

rear diff possible if its overrun noise - is it leaking too? Cheers

You're right about the pads. The pinion seal sprang a leak about 18 months ago but was obviously replaced under warranty. It's due a service so I'll be having words about the issue when it goes in, I'll also be debating if I will be keeping this one, chopping it in for new or taking another path.
