Advice please - dismembering handbrake?
Before I finally go to the dealers again with my bloody clattering noises, I've decided to do what everyone suggests Rolling Eyes and remove the handbrake shoes to rule them out as a problem Thumbs Up
Since I'll have to do it in the parkgarage at work, I don't want any nasty surprises...

AFAIK, I have to:
1) undo the 4 nuts on the drum (already bought a ring spanner for this),
2) slide the propshaft back (it should slide back easily?),
3) unhook the springs and remove shoes, pistons etc. (leaving the cable attached to something?)
4) put the drum/shaft back on.

I have this guide:
http://www.repairmylandrover.co.uk/defende...lue_Plugin

Is there anything more I need to know about taking it all apart, i.e. tricky bits, special tools or injury?
Any help/advice much appreciated Very Happy

Cheers,

Normally i end up having to take the rear prop off at both ends as it doesnt slide back far enough to clear the studs in the drum, i do have a 90 though so you may be ok with the 110. Also what size spanner did you buy? unless its changed on the puma you need a 9/16 AF not a 14mm one, its a common mistake people make.

Pete.

Cheers. Yeah - I was worried about sliding the prop back - perhaps someone here knows if you can do it on a 110.
I bought a 9/16" spanner last Summer when I thought about doing it then - didn't have the balls until now Laughing
Do you have any trouble getting the shoes out/in? I'm trying to figure out what I can leave inside there whilst I'm driving around to test it... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Is it clattering when its hot and you brake pulling up to stop?
If so get under it and back the handbrake off with a 17mm spanner only about 1/4 - 1/2 a turn problem solved. unfortunatly you will need to do this pretty much everytime it comes back from the dealers.

Yes, but the German dealers screwed it up so badly last time that the lever is vertical when I pull it Shocked
As they've "tried" to fix the clattering twice and I also have trouble changing from second to third gear (after my last visit Rolling Eyes ) I thought I'd try to rule out the possibility of gear/transfer box problems causing the noise.
However, I will again do as you suggest before I rip it's guts out - thanks for the reminder Thumbs Up
Cheers

The lever going near vertical will be adjustment on the cable, not necessarily the clearance between drum and shoe & yes you need to drop the prop off the rear axle first IIRC.

Cheers Thumbs Up
When I looked underneath, they've adjusted the cable almost completely out - I have no idea what they've done at the drum end Rolling Eyes
Stiil, going to a different dealer soon - maybe more luck there... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

I had this problem from new and the dealers swapped a couple of drum's and swapped the cable, which improved things but occasionally the clattering would come back.

My solution in the end was to back the shoes off and put up with the brake handle coming up higher than is usual, although randomly it will brake on only three or four clicks. I worry that it has got hot and that at some point it is going to cool down and roll down a hill. I used a laser temperature gauge to look at how hot the drum was getting and that seemed to be linked, now the pads are backed right off I never get the clattering.

I always leave it in gear and think about which way the wheels are pointing.

The only guarantee is probably something like X-Eng XBrake http://www.x-eng.co.uk/X-BrakeDef.asp?MID=31 my local dealer service manager was so frustrated after the weekly visits that he recommended when the warranty ended to consider changing it.

Another little safety moment: (oil industry thing)

If you are doing this at work car park, you will appreciate the general iq of your work colleagues better than I but I can expect at least 2 risks:
1. Some one drives over your feet if they are hanging out of the side of the vehicle because they are stupid.
2. The sight of you under your vehicle over loads their brain and they promptly drive into your vehicle injuring you in the process.

I actually have one already and waiting in my garage! Incidentally, Simon at X-Eng is a brilliant chap Thumbs Up
Won't fit it until warranty expires (still 2 years) but didn't want to miss the chance to get one Laughing
I'll try playing with the adjuster again tomorrow, but bear in mind the handle is already at vertical before I back anything off Rolling Eyes

Thanks RFT - both scenarios are likely in my workplace Laughing Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Don't forget you can adjust the pads away from the drum with the adjuster on the drum and wind the cable back separately.
