Rough at startup and smoke
Hello,
The last couple of mornings I have started my 2007 puma up and it has been rough with a fair bit of smoke for about 5 seconds after starting. After this it gets smooth as normal and the smoke stops.
Any ideas? I was thinking glow plugs or injectors.
Tried turning the ignition on twice this morning to let the glow plugs do their thing twice but still the same issue (although less cranking reqiured).

Mines the same when it's cold.

Monday was the worst as I'd not used it all weekend and was covered in snow and ice. Gave it a couple of glow plug cycles but it fired up after three or four turns of the engine, sounded like a bag of spanners and chucked out a lot of smoke, but after 10 seconds or so it had settled down.

When it's warm or during the summer it's fine.

I'd be tempted to say its normal (mines recently been serviced too), but don't hold me to it.

Mine was bad last week. Healthy battery, just turning over but wouldn't fire. Smokes a lot on start up and runs rough. Soon clears though.

Have the EGR checked, mine did the same a few years ago.

I have noticed that mine has been doing this too on the recent cold mornings, a few seconds of dense whitish smoke whcih clears in a few seconds, and even more rattly than normal.

As far as I can tell, the EGR is still working properly (at least it still makes the ugga-ugga-ugga on switch off).

Thanks for all the replies. Still having the same issue (seems to be blueish smoke) on first startup with rough running but really no problems at all after 5 seconds.
Never seem to have any problems after the initial first start of the day as recently left it for 8/9 hours in the day after driving to work and no issues when starting in the evening.

Due for a service soon so will get it looked over.

chuck in some 2SO and see if it makes a difference? It may just clean up some carboned-up components. --

Sounds like the EGR...my D3 was just the same, and it was indeed the EGR.

Re Tesco fuel - don't do it!! I use Ultimate etc and it really does make a Difference.

I use Tesco Diesel + 2so and have done since new - No Problems , 2010 90 XS and now has 25,000m + on the clock. Only time I don't use Tesco is when I'm travelling when I use whatever is available. Thumbs Up LANDYWATCH

Sounds like my TD5.

Only started after the EGR was blanked. After initial start everything is fine.

Changed the MAF, no oil in the harness, no apparent oil loss, no water problems Shocked

My Puma blows a bit of blue smoke in the winter on first start but that is just a little unburnt fuel.

TD5 is back in next week and the workshop are going to have a look to see if they can find the cause. In my case it may be down to something gummed up due to very little use, I am sure all will be revealed soon Thumbs Up

It sure does. I have been using cheaper French supermarket diesel for years, and the engine hammered away rather distinctly, and on turn off, the EGR cleaning "chuka chuka" was quite loud....
About 4 months ago I switched to using BP Ultimate, and immediately noticed a change in engine sound level, much smoother, less hammering. And the "chuka chuka" has become a nice quiet discreet cleaning cycle.

I have no idea about any change in fuel economy with BP Ultimate, but one thing is for sure, everything works like a dream now. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Cheers for the replys lads, got back onto the Asda fuel, threw about 300ml of 2so in on a full tank and all is well, less smoke on start up and not lumpy. Seems a little quieter and the egr valve cleaning cycle is less prominent sound.
Would you always put 2SO in every fuel up or every other. Would you use 2so with bp ultimate (only when i'm flushed with funds will she get BP).
