Hmmmm - not compared Land Rover's warranty, but I did compare my Dad's BMW warranty, and the Warranty Direct one seemed to actually cover more than the BMW one for less money.

My Dad went with Warranty Direct after comparing (line by line) the quotes from each supplier.

But the proof is only really apparent when you have to make a claim... Dad hasn't made a claim as yet with Warranty Direct.

For me, I would go without (unless there was a real reason). My last Discovery, I owned from new for almost 10 years, and drove 187,000 miles.

The biggest single repair bill was under £1000, and that was several repairs at once (clutch, DMF, a couple of oil leaks and a full service ...and an ACE sensor before I removed ACE all together).

The money I saved on warranty purchases over the years would have been considerable.

When Mine runs out next year I am going to pay a set amount into my saving account. If I have to use it so be it but if I don't then it will be a bonus.

I was kind of thinking along the same lines as to just leave £1000 for anything that could POSSIBLY go wrong.. I had such a bad experience with my audi that left me paying nearly £2000 last christmas for a new ECU and tiptronic transmission on an 04' 1.8T A4 Big Cry

Ours came with one years LR Approved Used warranty which I believe is the same as an extended one?

Firstly, it won't cover corrosion, secondly the mileage needs to be under a set amount (can't remember what though!) and thirdly it isn't like extending a factory warranty - it's actually a third party "insured warranty" dealt with by an outside company.

When something goes wrong (note the absence of "if") they will send out an assessor and it's basically pot luck as to whether they will honour a claim or not - in our case with the halfshafts, the assessor rejected it. After a LOT of hassle including contact with LR head office (and threats to us from the dealer we bought it from!!) I called the company to ask why it had been turned down - it was about £1500 in total (the hub had also broken) - they couldn't understand why and immediately accepted the claim.

Warranty Direct are APPALLING IMO - they will do anything they can to avoid paying and when they do, they pay well under the odds. I had it on an Astra and I may as well have thrown £300 down a drain.

Quentin Wilson does a similar thing but reviews seem to be very mixed.

So I have learned the following - find a good Indy garage - they are worth their weight in gold (mine saved me £1000s by spotting issues while under warranty), put that £500 into a pot and pay ofr stuff that ACTUALLY NEEDS DOING rather than throwing it at some faceless insurance company whose job is is to avoid paying for anything at all costs.

Oh and get it Waxoyled/Dinitrolled! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

common problem due to the possition of the gearbox ecu.

I'm not worrying about it....it;s a landrver with a transit engine......easy to repair.

Not bad down here today for once!

I'm sure you know this but you need to shift your mindset with Defender ownership. Stuff WILL go wrong but if you expect it and it's not too tragically expensive, it's best to just sort it then carry on. We had a load of issues with ours - had a day or two of weakness when we considered chopping it in for something else but everything else we looked at simply depressed me. I'm far happier having a working Landy than some bland faux 4x4 Eurobox. As will you be!

I guess you could hang tight on the extras for a bit and save some for the odd breakage?! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

This is an issue I considered when my warranty expired, especially as I do 30k a year.

After quotes from both LR and Warranty Direct, I decided neither we're especially worth the paper they were printed on, left the money in the bank and took my chances.

In fact despite the amount of issues picked up by the dealer whilst it was all under warranty (big recommendation for the guys at Williams Land Rover, Manchester) i've only had one issue so far out of warranty. And that was for corrision which I think (someone correct me if i'm wrong) is for 6 years anyway. 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone
2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone
2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW

Both my wife and I have quite a bit in PB's but still waiting for a big one Laughing One day maybe. I think we are just ahead if we had left it in the savings account. This said we have not had anything the last two months Big Cry

I had a LR warranty on a second hand D3 and found it to be good when something needed doing, not long after purchase the gear lever linkage (small plastic bit ) failed so kept jumping out of gear, a LRman was on my drive the next morning (could have had AA immediately) checked over, taken to local dealers and all sorted in a day. Also replaced the load cover, steering wheel airbag (cover was tatty, so unsafe) and track rod ends, all of which they picked up (as well as me).

Couldn't fault the service (included loan car) so could be worth the money if something expensive goes wring (more likely on a D3 as lots of expensive electrickery)

Never had another need to claim after that - the gear linkage went again and that cost me £150 ish to get fixed Mad after warranty ran out.

That prompted me to move to new defender, as the warranty was going to be iirc £800 per year and three years of that went towards the new 110 (that's how I explained the logic to the mrs anyway) so along with the vat off and a good trade in it was a no brainer really.

I guess if you are fairly handy then most things can be fixed fairly inexpensively on a Defender (I hope) so warranty maybe not such an issue - we'll see

Have a good cHristmas one and all.
