a quick scan on the various Merc forums and it seems its not unusual - the rot and the free replacements, sometimes with a 6 week courtesy car thrown in!

If you're reimporting it, do you have and have you forwarded to dvlc the original registration number?
IIRC they will try to realign this number to it anyway.

Could only really apply to cars failing Mot's or CT's etc so if you're doing proper preventative maintenance it wouldn't be a problem.

If Oldowner is replacing the axle for a 2008 unit, the old one needs saving in case its any use for Payney1000 in his legal battle - I believe he has access to aerospace tech iirc.
