Stuck in diff lock
Did a spot of laning today and as it was slippery I used diff lock. I did have to do one section uphill in reverse which was quite long. Anyway, got back onto the road and headed home, only to find the diff lock light was still lit on the dash, even though the lever had been moved. I tried moving it and had no luck. I carried on, looking for a place to pull in. When I did it was a bit bumpy, and the light went out by itself.
Is there some trick to disengaging the diff lock that I don't know about, as I thought you just moved the lever and that was it?

Cheers. 2011 110 USW

Diff locks can sometimes be sticky when going forwards, reversing often helps it to disengage it.

Hi Dan

My diff lock quite often will not disengage, especially if used for quite a distance. Land Rover Experience told my to put the lever in the lock off position and reverse for a short distance until the light goes out. Works everytime for me. They also told me it should disengage easily the more diff lock is used - hasn't happened so far.

I am sure somebody will be along in a minute to explain all the technicalities Thumbs Up

Ben just beat me to it !

Good to see you too Ben, some photos in the photos section.

I will try that trick (reversing) next time. I suppose we have to be honest, its the only time it has had diff lock in since they set up the Tacho (they had it engaged to use the roller) 2011 110 USW

In Wales we would push the clutch in and pulse the brakes while we were moving forward, worked 99% of the time Smile

The diff is wound up, if possible put two wheels on some slippy stuff (verge etc) and it will pop out itself. Thumbs Up Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

Reversing until the lamp goes out or running two wheels along a grass /gravel / similar verge has always worked for me too Steve.

Tip I was given by an LRE instructor a while back - apply full lock in one direction or the other and then reverse a touch. Works every time. Obviously by applying full steering lock you are forcing the front and rear axle to turn at different speeds, therefore forcing the centre diff to work and encouraging the lock to disengage. Simple concept really, but one I hadn't thought about until I was actually told about it. Thumbs Up 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

That does make a lot of sense now that you mention it. I did of course have to turn on full lock to get onto the road, which begs the question why it didn't disengage at that point. As it had been going up a very slippery track I don't see how it got wound up in the first place. Could it be my series IIA has an advantage over my Defender? Twisted Evil 2011 110 USW

The longer you have it engaged, the more it gets wound up. answer is to use it when you need it then take it out asap. you'll find even in short bursts the light may stay on, before you start reversing etc just make sure the load is off (ie youre not going up hil), take your foot off the gas then blip it a couple of times and you ll find it comes out.

the others are right though, the grss trick works and the reversing full lock to lock works in heavily wound up situations.

Turning full lock out on to tarmac would probably have made it more reluctant to disengage. The full lock trick works in reverse. Darren

Does the reverse trick also work on Tarmac?
I have no idea why my gearbox jumped to diff lock almost home. When I pushed the leaver back, the diff lock light is flickering but it simply doesn't disengage.

Try Jacking up one wheel, this will release all windup then you should be able to disengage the diff-lock. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

When I went on one of the LR experience trips and I had the same problem they told me to engage reverse and put handbreak on and just let it take up slack against handbreak and it's always came out for me Thumbs Up It's good to be back from the dark side
