There's no reason why you can't just fit one of those bleed bulbs and leave it in permanently. For example Peugeots with the XUD engines used to have one permanently plumbed in.

So the 2.2 has a lift pump and doesn’t need to be bled- do you just put the ignition to the accessory position and it runs the fuel pump to prime the system? Or is it more involved?

Basically yes, the 2.2 and TD5 have an electric lift pump, so turn on the ignition and let the pump bring the pressure back up and away you go.

Apologies but I'm still a bit confused about whether I need some kind of priming apparatus (tube, pump etc.) or not if I completely run out of fuel..

I have a 2014 2.2 Tdci Puma.

Also, has anyone tried one if these on a Defender Puma 2.2?

Sorry for being a bit slow here, but some say priming kit is needed, others say not.

Thanks,

Peter. Drink Coffee, Talk to Strangers and Take Photos.

I have a 2014 puma 2.2.

I did the water drain procedure recently, when I closed the tap on the filter I simply turned the key to the accessory position (the one before start) to turn on the pump. Once I heard the tone change I started the engine, it stared without incident and I let it idle for a couple of minutes. No problems 1000miles later. Next time I’ll try a fresh filter, but I expect there are no problems with the 2.2 and it’s in tank pump wrt priming the filter. 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2

Nope 2.2's have an electric in tank pump no need for a priming tool.

For a 2.4 does this have right connection? Draper 43986 Diesel Priming Pump https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0012332TU/ref...KBbV6A2M70 Seems like a good price, but would it do the job?

On YouTube there is a video of a different product, the Sealey VS555. You can see when the guy is demonstrating it that there is some sort of valve, that the Draper one above doesn’t have, but I can’t work out what it does and if that somehow makes it function better.

There are two connections near the top of the engine bay - an 11.8mm female/male followed by an 9.89mm female/ male.

The connectors appear to be an industry standard sizing and are available here for a few quid. There may be other vendors, was just the first one I came across.

Flaky pictures showing the general arrangement and the size markings on the fittings:

Should be easy to select a pair of either the smaller or larger fittings to complete a priming set.

Hi All!

Just curious, would it not be possible to get a priming pump on a switch just for priming the system? I realize this is maybe a more expensive solution though, but is it possible?

As for the official tool, so you plumb the male bit into the part that usually plugs into the male end of the LR006249 (Pipe to Pump) and the female bit of the tool goes onto the male bit of the pipe? If so, how does one use the inline valve to vent the air in the system?

The tank is the same for a TD5 and a 2.4 TDCi, ergo it must be possible to fit a TD5 submerged pump into a Puma tank. I am not sure if this could be done to use the TD5 pump for a quick purge, then shut it off.

Similarly I imagine that the 2.2 TDCi still uses the same tank, and that has a submerged pump. I don't know if it is the same as a TD5 pump, or a lower pressure unit.

I guess you could leave an in-line pump (manual or electric) in the same position as the fuel bleeding pump we're discussing here...That would be pretty easy to do. It has been mentioned before on here but not sure if anyone's done it yet Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

OK, so now, the question becomes, what kind and size of pump is needed then when in the engine bay. The units mentioned by blackwolf are for the fuel tank side of things.

Hi All!

I'm considering on purchasing a Sealey VS055 Diesel Fuel System Priming Device to help me to prime my truck as I reckon that there is already air in the fuel pump hence my cranking but no firing. Will this device work for my purposes? If I order it now from Amazon UK, I can get it next week (I'm on the other side of the world).

Thanks.

Update: just looked it up and this cannot be used on the Puma. Bummer Sad If you want the kit that can work with Ford (Puma) engines the kit needed is Sealey VS552. It also comes with other hose attachments as well and has the vent thing near the end which is apparently some kind of diagnostic connector and vacuum monitor as well. It's going for £79.99 on Amazon UK at the moment.

Looks like I really need to make one up for the meantime. I already have the old pipe to pump that I can salvage for the fittings, anyone know the size of bulb and hoses needed to make this work?

If I need to re-prime my pump, I just keep pumping until the bulb gets a bit difficult to squeeze and then start the engine?
